The Vegetarian World Forum

This magazine was edited and published independently by Geoffrey Rudd in the UK, and was sold worldwide. The various name changes are shown in green below. The changing sub-titles are also added. During most of the 1950s space in each issue was given to IVU reports, and it became the official IVU journal.

At the same time as this journal was produced, there were also The Vegetarian Messenger from The Vegetarian Society (based in Manchester); and The Vegetarian News from the London Vegetarian Society. In 1958 they merged to become The British Vegetarian.

Also in 1958 Geoffrey Rudd became the IVU Honorary (=unpaid) General Secretary, he had already become Secretary of the Vegetarian Society (Manchester) and subsequently used The British Vegetarian as the official IVU journal in the 1960s.

  • THE VEGETARIAN
  • No.2 Vol.5 - Summer 1951 - " " --"read by at least 25,000 people"

All issues from Autumn 1951 to Summer 1954 are missing - during this time the World Forum started carrying regular reports and news from IVU. Geoffrey Rudd was now on the IVU Executive Committee, and there was some discussion about the Forum being taken over by IVU, but he preferred to keep it as an independent business.

  • THE VEGETARIAN AND HUMANITARIAN WORLD FORUM
  • No.4 Vol.XII - Jan.-June 1959 [with IVU News, 7 pages]

It is not clear what happened to the numbering sequence here, but Geoffrey Rudd retired as editor and publication appears to have ceased for a while.

From late 1958, when Geoffrey Rudd became the IVU General Secretary, the inside front cover stated: "World Forum is the official organ of the International Vegetarian Union (by arrangement with the publishers)". From around 1960 this ceased and The British Vegetarian, now with Mr. Rudd editing that journal, carried all IVU reports.

Under the new editor, Esme Wynne Tyson, World Forum leaned rather more towards the 'Humanitarian' aspect of the title, and became more philosophical, distancing it from the more practical British Vegetarian. The few minor items of direct relevance to IVU have been included elsewhere on this website.

The last issue above states that the editor, Esme Wynne-Tyson, had retired with the previous issue, and introduces a new editor, along with details of how to subscribe to future issues. It is currently not known whether there were actually any more after this.
