IVU Patrons are the friends and benefactors whose support keeps the International Vegetarian Union — founded in 1908 — active, independent and global. By making a single lifetime contribution, Patrons help fund the World Vegfest, our regional congresses, our archives and the daily work of advocating for a kinder food system.

The status of Patron is more than a donation: it is a public commitment to a cause that spans generations and continents, recognised by IVU with a lifetime membership and a personalised digital certificate.

A single contribution grants permanent recognition as an IVU lifetime supporter, with no renewals or recurring fees.

Every Patron receives a personalised, verifiable IVU Digital Certificate to display proudly — at home, in the office or online.

A brief history of the Patron status

From the constitution to today

1908
The International Vegetarian Union is founded, uniting national societies under a single worldwide banner.
1982
The concept of IVU Patron is introduced for the first time in the Union's constitution, formalising the role of long-term benefactors.
1999
A new constitution and updated bylaws redefine the status, anchoring Patronship within the broader category of IVU Supporters.
Today
IVU counts more than 70 active Patrons — mostly individuals, with a handful of organisations — spread across every inhabited continent.

What the bylaws say

Articles of Association · S.2.3

Individuals may become IVU Supporters on payment of an annual or life contribution, or by volunteering their time to work on any appropriate project.

IVU Bylaws

Patrons shall make a minimum donation to IVU, of such amount as shall be from time to time decided by the International Council. They shall be classed as lifetime supporters for the purposes of Section 2.3 of the Articles of Association. Read the full bylaws →
