email to the IVU Council, November 2, 2002:
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
It is with profound grief that I inform you of the passing away of Mrs. Beeldman, wife of Mr. Jan Beeldman on September 27, 2002 in Linden at the age of 90 years. I received the letter from Jan yesterday. You might all remember Jan Beeldman as the Africa Regional Secretary on IVU Council for over 17 year till he handed over this responsibility to me in 1997. Jan has been given Honourary Life membership of IVU, and later Fellowship for his services to Vegetarianism. Jan has been a vegetarian for 75 years, since the age of 15 years, long before the vegetarian concept was understood or accepted globally.
Unfortunately, Jan is not connected to email. If you would like to send him messages, the postal address is:
Mr. Jan Beeldman
82 Darenwood Village
Private Bag X05
2104 Linden
South Africa.
Or else you may write on my email, and whatever I receive by Wednesday, I shall post-mail them all to him.

November 3 2002:
Thank you for the information, PK. I have known Jan since we first met at the world congress in Loughborough in 1979. I do not think he attended any congresses after the one in Baltimore in 1984.
Jan has kept in regular contact with me writing at least once or twice a year and sending Christmas cards. When I was Hon. General Secretary of IVU he was always a great support and offered every encouragement.
For many years he was very active in the South African Vegetarian Society.
I shall write to him immediately.
Regards,
Maxwell

Dear Prof. Jain
It is with great sadness that we have to advise that our dear friend Jan Beeldman passed away on the 2nd November 2002. His wife of 64 years, Klazien, passed away five weeks ago.
Our records were lost when the computer crashed sometime back. Could you please advise me when you took over from Jan Beeldman so that I can pass this information on together with any other background details?
Many thanks
Alexandra Spicer

November 11. 2002:
Dear PK,
I was very sad to learn of Jan's passing. He was a very sincere and delightful man. I think it likely that I am the only member of the IC who knew him personally since he did not attend world congresses after 1984. I do know he was very anti apartheid and he wrote about the political situation in some of his letters to me. Last Christmas was the last time I heard from him.
Jan was devoted to his wife so it comes as no surprise that he did not outlive her by very long.
I think we should give a brief report of his death in the magazine. Some of the older members of the South African society should be able to provide some detail.
Regards,
Maxwell

OBITUARY - JAN & KLAZIEN BEELDMAN
It is with profound grief, we were informed of the passing away of Mr.
Jan Beeldman on 28 November, 2002, and Mrs. Klazien Beeldman on 02 September
2002.
Jan Beeldman, a vegetarian since his early teens was a strong supporter of vegetarianism, and played leading role in the propagation of vegetarianism in the region. Jan was strongly involved in and a great supporter of the Organic Soil Association in 50s and 60s, the Vegetarian Society throughout his life and a number of charity projects including Cluny Farm (a working farm for people with cerebral palsy) in the 60s. Since 1980 he was the Regional Secretary for Africa Region and Council member of the International Vegetarian Union, a position which he served very ably, and relinquished to me (P K Jain) in 1997 on account of advancing age. In recognition of his services to vegetarianism in the region and globally through IVU, Jan was conferred the Honorary Fellowship of IVU in 1999. Jan was a strong supporter of the Vegetarian Society of Botswana, with whom I was in regular correspondence. He often send us articles, press cuttings, other writings, discussed current important issues pertaining to vegetarianism such as genetic foods, mad cow disease, animal welfare etc. Two recipes of cookies in this issue were sent by Jan in his last letter in August 2002.
Jan had very strong views on religion, alcohol, smoking, vegetarianism, and genetic engineering. He was a philanthropist, a conscientious objector and a humanist. His hobbies included classical music, reading, 16mm photography, gardening and travel. His great passion was the many game reserves in Southern Africa, which has been passed on both his sons and their offspring. Klazien became a midwife and dedicated childcare nurse with particular interest in the black African population. She loved gardening
Jan and Klazien, born in Bergen, Holland in 1912 and in Ymuiden, in 1913 respectively, met in their late teens through a youth movement. They were married in Johannesburg in January 1938 and only their death within a short period of less than three months ended their relationship of over 70 years. They had two sons, Ron 1949 and Rene 1951. They are grandparents to Chloe and Jehan
Jan was trained as a plumber and Klazien in office duties. Jan went to South Africa in the mid 1930s to work on the mines and was followed by Klazien in late 1937. After the war Jan went on to become a successful business man.
