Commercial fishing: below the surface
The
sheer numbers of fish slaughtered for human consumption are staggering.
Billions of these feeling animals are torn from the ocean or reared on
factory farms every year. So in 1997, Dawn Carr was compelled to take
action and launched an aggressive anti-fishing campaign from PETA's world
headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, USA.
Dawn's uncompromising approach to the rights of fish has led her to confrontations at fishing tournaments, protests outside aquaria, scores of lectures at conferences and elementary schools, public debates with marine biologists and, recently, time aboard a Norwegian fishing boat filming a documentary about how fish suffer before they are filleted.
Before relocating to the UK earlier this year, Dawn also served as manager of PETA's International Grassroots Campaign Department, where she co-ordinated activities with animal advocates worldwide.
Now living in London, Dawn is the director of PETA Europe Ltd. and is committed to continuing her work in behalf of fish.
