Frauenkirche
Germanys most important Protestant church was erected here, following
the designs of George Bähr, between 1726 and 1743. Its characteristic
dome, called the "stone bell" owing to its shape, collapsed
on February 15, 1945 under the rain of bombs. An anti-war monument during
the GDR period, it is now being rebuilt as a symbol of conciliation. The
official consecration was in October 2005.

Semper
Opera House
Built 1838-41 by Gottfried Semper. Gutted by fire in 1869. Rebuilt
1871-78 in High Renaissance style according to Semper´s plans
by his son Manfred. The house was completely destroyed in 1945 and
reopened in 1985 after extensive reconstruction. It is the only
theater in Germany that bears the name of its architect.
Zwinger
Built 1710-28 by the architect Pöppelmann in cooperation with
the sculptor Permoser. Originally designed as an orangery and a
setting for court festivities, it was later used for exhibitions.
Most perfect example of late Baroque architecture in Germany. Construction
of the Semper Gallery 1847-55. In the Zwinger: Old Masters Picture
Gallery, Armoury (Rüstkammer), Porcelain Collection, Mathematisch-Physikalischer
Salon, Zoological Museum.
Brühl
Terrace
A former rampart. 1739-48 laid out as a "pleasance" with
trees and walks for the then Prime Minister Count Brühl. After
addition of the magnificent flight of steps (1814) made accessible
to the public. The discovery of European porcelain (by Böttger
in 1708) was made in the vaults beneath the terrace. Viewing of
the Dresden Fortress.
The
Kulturpalast
Cultural Center, opened in 1969. This festival hall, with seating for
2,400, is not only the scene of regular concerts of the Dresden Philharmonic
Orchestra, but also hosts a great number of other concerts and events.
