It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude that the International Vegetarian Union (IVU) announces the passing of Kevin Bruce Pickard, former Chairperson and lifelong advocate for the vegetarian and vegan movements worldwide. Kevin departed peacefully on April 9, 2025, at the age of 64, after courageously facing a recent ALS diagnosis, surrounded by his loving wife Gwyn Treharne, children Sara and Ley, and loyal dog Miles, serenaded by gentle birdsong.

Presenting the award is Kevin Pickard,
IVU President and Congress Co-coordinator.
Born on September 27, 1960, in Simcoe, Ontario, Kevin’s remarkable life was driven by compassion, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to leaving the world better than he found it—a promise he profoundly kept. Kevin served IVU in multiple essential roles, most notably as Chairperson from 2000 to 2002, Deputy Chair, Deputy President, and Council Member between 1996 and 2004. His visionary leadership significantly shaped IVU’s modern direction, notably by recognizing early the immense potential of internet communication—a relatively new technology at the time. He championed the expansion of IVU’s digital presence, fostering global collaboration, openness, and effective communication within the international vegetarian community at a moment when many still doubted the internet’s potential as a transformative tool.

Kevin also played a pivotal role in coordinating and organizing the highly successful 34th World Vegetarian Congress, hosted by the Toronto Vegetarian Association in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from July 10-16, 2000. This event marked a significant milestone, strengthening international ties and amplifying the global vegetarian message. The congress featured renowned speakers who have since become prominent figures, such as Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder and chair of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), and T. Colin Campbell, PhD, co-author of The China Project.

Kevin passionately believed in unity and collective action, tirelessly encouraging others to join forces for a more compassionate and sustainable world. Beyond IVU, his impact was deeply felt through his long-standing presidency and board membership of the Toronto Vegetarian Association (now VegTO), as well as leadership roles within the Vegetarian Union of North America.

An avid photographer and nature lover, Kevin’s dedication extended beyond activism into capturing the world's beauty—from backyard birds to cosmic wonders. He cherished animals deeply, providing care and admiration for every creature that crossed his path.
