Vegetarian Union (IVU)
This is the first "Youth Page" for the magazine since the 33rd World Vegetarian Congress held in Chiang Mai, Thailand earlier in 1999. At the Congress, a new International Council (IC) was nominated. The "IC" consists of people from many countries of the world, aimed at giving vegetarians a truly global focus. These people discuss various vegetarian issues of international importance, and will report back to the next World Vegetarian Congress to be held in Canada in July 2000.
|They Said It!
I became vegetarian for the animals, but there were other unexpected benefits... I became more supple, which is important for an athlete... I love being vegetarian!
- Martina Navratilova, tennis champion
If you are studying or have studied the plays of William Shakespeare, you might find the following quote of interest. It comes from his play "Twelfth Night" and one of the characters Sir Andrew Aguecheek says these words:
Me thinks sometimes I have no more wit than a Christian or an ordinary man has, but I am a great eater of beef and I believe that does harm my wit.
Could this be the first literary reference to Mad Cow Disease?
If a robin redbrest in a cage
Puts all heaven in a rage
How feels heaven when
Dies the millionth battery hen?
- Spike Milligan, author and scriptwriter
