Un informe del Centro para la Conservación Marina de los Estados Unidos, un grupo de apoyo al medio ambiente, informó que: “Se ha hecho muy poco esfuerzo para recopilar información básica, como el número de tiburones que están siendo cazados y descartados”. Las estadísticas de la cantidad de peces traídos a la orilla son poco precisas, pero se estima que el total va de unas 200.000 toneladas en 1947 a más de 725.000 toneladas en 1994.
