Es su así llamada capacidad de sufrir la que motiva a los activistas de derechos animales a tratar de extender el círculo de la compasión a los animales no humanos. Es importante, por consiguiente, que este axioma tenga una fuerte base en hechos sólidos para poder resistir los ataques de los escépticos. Los ataques muchas veces aparecen cuando los oponentes de los derechos animales aceptan que una frontera moral delimitada por la pertenencia a una especie es arbitraria (como se puede mostrar fácilmente). Aparentemente, el único recurso es negar que los animales posean la capacidad que justifica la consideración moral: la capacidad de sufrir.
