O mundo científico hoje tem o poder de alterar os processos mais íntimos da natureza, não somente transferindo características entre vegetais, mas também realizando alterações cruzadas entre vegetais, animais e seres humanos. A engenharia genética, que em si não tem limites éticos, cria um sério impacto no meio ambiente de animais e plantas, violando nossa relação com o mundo natural. Muitos acreditam que os animais têm o direito de viver suas vidas livres da interferência humana, de acordo com suas estruturas genéticas originais. Além disto, os animais também jamais poderão servir como modelo de doenças humanas porque são demasiado diferentes. No entanto, cientistas continuam tentando, quanto mais não seja porque o mercado de transplantes humanos está avaliado em mais de 6 bilhões de dólares por ano. ![pig](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/news/2-97/vacaerdo.gif) A biotecnologia nos últimos anos tem progredido aos trancos e barrancos, representando um salto quântico na exploração dos animais e permitindo aos seres humanos transportar gens de uma espécie animal para outra completamente diferente. Cientistas e empresas de biotecnologia dos países mais desenvolvidos querem criar novos animais que produzam carnes mais saborosas em maiores quantidades, maiores quantidades de lãs mais sedosas e mais facilmente industrializáveis, além de animais com órgãos que possam ser transplantados para seres humanos. Isto não pára aí: muitas das culturas geneticamente modificadas, já em testes de campo nos Estados Unidos e no mundo todo, podem não somente produzir um impacto devastador tipo Parque dos Dinossauros no eco-sistema global, como também afetar economias de países do terceiro mundo dependentes da agricultura. A engenharia genética é uma ciência reducionista que ignora seus amplos efeitos dinâmicos nos ecosistemas do planeta. A engenharia genética envolve a introdução de genes contendo ADN (ácido desoxi-ribonucleico) retirado de seres humanos ou animais e injetado dentro de células de bactérias, fungos ou outros animais, sendo um de seus resultados os assim chamados animais transgênicos, que não podem se desenvolver naturalmente ou através da seleção natural. Para forçar fêmeas animais a produzirem grande quantidade de óvulos são injetados hormônios e também inseridas esponjas impregnadas de hormônios diretamente em seus tratos reprodutivos. A este processo chamamos super-ovululação. Os ovos então são inseminados artificialmente, manual ou cirurgicamente. A seguir, os embriões são injetados com células previamente tratadas com ADN com genes para os tecidos preferidos e então transferidos cirurgicamente para mães "adotivas". Este processo exige 80 animais doadores e receptores para produzir somente uma vaca transgênica, caso tudo corra bem, o que é muito raro. Uma vez produzido o animal transgênico, começa seu sofrimento. Por exemplo: genes não porcinos foram colocados em porcos para produzir animais com úlceras gástricas, doenças do fígado e rins, aleijões, visão defeituosa, perda de coordenação, susceptibilidade à pneumonia e ao diabetes. As pesquisas de engenharia genética são desenvolvidas mais freqüentemente em animais tais como ratos, porcos, ovelhas e outros animais de criação e peixes, assim como em plantas, como tomate, tabaco e grãos. Vegetarianos em todo o mundo estão seriamente preocupados se o alimento que ingerem é realmente vegetal. O tomate Flavr Savr, como é chamado, é geneticamente alterado pela introdução de genes de um peixe, o linguado encontrado no Ártico, para torná-lo resistente ao congelamento e ao transporte, para que permaneça maduro por mais tempo na própria planta ao mesmo tempo que permaneça firme durante a colheita, maior e mais saboroso. Nenhum leigo é capaz de dizer a diferença entre o tomate Flavr Savr e um tomate normal, razão primária pela qual os vegetarianos exigem que os tomates alterados sejam devidamente rotulados. Um rato geneticamente criado sem sistema imunológico foi desenvolvido para produzir órgãos humanos internos ou externos tais como orelhas. A ausência de um sistema imune assegura que o rato não rejeitará o tecido humano. ![photo](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/news/2-97/24-oouse.jpg) | Cientistas fazem um molde de um órgão humano, uma orelha, por exemplo, com tecidos biodegradáveis de poliéster ou outros polímeros e então transferem células dos órgãos que desejam e implantam o conjunto no rato. Após desenvolvido o órgão, é implantado no rato que dá um jeito de sobreviver depois que essa orelha é removida. Da mesma forma, cientistas têm desenvolvido fígados, pele, cartilagem, ossos, ureteres, válvulas cardíacas, tendões, intestinos, vasos sangüíneos e tecidos para mamas com tais polímeros. No entanto, se a idéia de se inverter o procedimento (trocar homens pelos ratos) fosse contemplada, as pessoas iriam dizer que é blasfêmia. Não se pensa nos animais envolvidos e a extensão aonde chegarão estes experimentos é incerta. Mudanças somente surgirão quando os cientistas reconhecerem o direito dos animais viverem suas vidas de forma saudável sem que os homens adulterem seus gens. Porcos também têm sido criados transgeneticamente de modo que seus órgãos possam ser transplantados em homens. Porcos transgênicos foram primeiramente criados em 1985 e cientistas desenvolveram órgãos em porcos com a propriedade de abrigar células humanas com proteínas capazes de enganar o sistema imune humano para que o órgão não seja rejeitado pelo sistema imunológico, esperam. Outro exemplo, é o de uma ovelha injetada com hormônios desenvolvidos pela bioengenharia para produzir uma lã que cai, uma ovelha "auto-tosquiável". Isto foi feito na Austrália onde infelizmente para as ovelhas o clima é ensolarado e quente a maior parte do tempo. Como resultado, as ovelhas abortam muito. Onde tudo isto acabará? Falando de ovelhas, a ovelha Welsh clonada é prova viva de que a vida pode ser criada sem esperma. Um cientista do Instituto Rosalin a criou fundindo uma célula criada em laboratório com um óvulo de ovelha esvaziado por uma descarga elétrica. Imagine criar-se uma ovelha em uma placa de laboratório! Ironicamente, os cientistas consideram anti-ético fazer isto com seres humanos. Em outro experimento bizarro, cientistas indianos do Nimbalkar Research Institute, Phaltan, Maharashtra, criaram por inseminação artificial um animal com a cabeça de um bode e o corpo de uma vaca. Este animal engorda mais rápido e assim a quantidade de carne aumenta. Cientistas afirmam que podem e farão animais geneticamente alterados que ajudarão a curar doenças humanas. Pesquisas transgênicas são feitas já há 20 anos e nenhuma doença humana foi curada, apesar de terem se desenvolvido inesperadamente doenças como diabetes, cegueira, aleijões e câncer (entre outras) em animais submetidos a estas ridículas experiências. A engenharia genética chegar a este ponto é um símbolo do consumismo ensandecido.
