Os essênios eram também conhecidos como nazarenos, e Nazaré era um de seus redutos, ainda que deve-se notar que o termo era anterior ao nome do lugar.Os membros da seita vestiam-se de branco e seguiam uma dieta vegetariana, como a orden monástica cristã dos Carmelitas, conhecidos também como Monges Brancos, devido a sua túnica branca, e é interesante notar que membros atuais dessa ordem afirmam abertamente que Jesus era Essênio e foi criado no Monte Carmela, ainda que as escrituras esseêias sejam excluídas da Bíblia promulgada geralmente pela Igreja. A escritura essênia mais importante é o *Evangelho dos Doze Santos,* redescoberta em 1888 e traduzida do aramaico pelo Rev. Gideon Jasper Ouseley. Esta versão do Novo Testamento difere marcadamente das geralmente aceitas generalmente e pinta Jesus como um vegetariano estrito, diante de quem outras criaturas se congregavam. *''E as aves se reuniam ao seu redor e lhes davam boas-vindas com seu canto e outras criaturas vivas se postavam a seus pés e ele as alimentava com suas mãos'*.
