Oktober 1999 - ein besonders heftiger Zyklon raste mit zerstörerischer Gewalt über die Küstengebiete Orissas hinweg. Dabei brachte er 25 Meter hohe Wellen und Windgeschwindigkeiten von bis zu 260 Stundenkilometern mit sich. Der Sturm beschleunigte Kokusnüsse auf die Geschwindigkeit von Gewehrkugeln. Durch seine Nachwirkungen wurden mehr als 20000 Menschen und unzähliges Vieh getötet, hundertausende Morgen Ackerland wurden zerstört, und er machte aus mehr als einer Million Menschen Obdachtlose, die dem Ganzen hungrig und fassungslos gegenüberstanden. Die Situation war von Chaos geprägt. Die regionalen Regierungsstellen verließen sich ganz und gar auf die Verfügbarkeit freiwilliger Hilfstrupps. Schon an dem Tag nach dem Zyklon trat die lokale 'Food for Life'-Gruppe mit Sitz in Bhubanesuara in Aktion. Freiwillige fuhren mit vier LKW und Booten, jeweils gefüllt mit frisch zubereiteter vegetarischer Suppe und frischem Trinkwasser, in die am stärksten betroffenen Gebiete, um den Überlebenden der Katastrophe zu helfen. Im ständigen Anblick von tausenden von Leichen konnte 'Food for Life' mehr als eine Million vegetarische Mahlzeiten, 40000 mit Trinkwasser gefüllte Flaschen, Decken, Kleidung und Erste-Hilfe-Sets an die Notleidenden verteilen. 'Food for Life' agiert in mehr als 50 Ländern der Erde und ist zur Zeit die weltgrößte vegetarische/vegane Hilfsorganisation.
