Das Projekt sollte das Risiko-Faktor-Profil unter Indischen Medizinstudenten in Indien analysieren und das Ergebnis mit einer Gruppe Asiatischer und Kaukasischer Medizinstudenten in Großbritannien vergleichen. 115 Studenten am MP Schah Medizinischen College wurden eingeladen, an der Studie zu teilnehmen, die ein Interview umfaßte, Fragebogen auswertete, auch eine physische Untersuchung, die Blut- und Urin-Tests umfaßte. Es wurde eine gesamte Antwort-Rate von 84.3% erreicht. Verglichen mit Ergebnissen früherer Studien wurden beträchtliche Unterschiede zwischen Indern und in Großbritannien ansässigen Asiaten festgestellt. Der Nikotin- und Alkohol-Gebrauch bei männlichen Indern war gering, während Inderinnen keinen Alkohol tranken und auch nicht rauchten. Hinsichtlich Diäten waren 84.6% der befragten Inder und 100% der befragen Inderinnen waren entweder Lacto -Vegetarier oder Lacto - Ovo - Vegetarier. Hinsichtlich des Körperbaus wiesen männliche Inder ein wesentlich geringeres Körpergewicht auf als britische Asiaten, waren aber nicht sonderlich kleiner. Inderinnen wiesen ein wesentlich geringeres Körpegewicht auf, waren auch kleiner als die britischen Inderinnen. Beim Vergleich der Lipid-Profile, sowohl bei männlichen als auch bei weiblichen Indern hatten die asiatischen Inder einen wesentlich geringeren Cholesterinspiegel, niedrigere Triglycerid-Werte und einen niedrigeren HDL Cholesterin-Spiegel als die in Großbritannien ansässigen Inder. Zum Beispiel hatten männliche Inder einen Gesamt-Cholesterin-Wert von 3.67 mmol/l verglichen mit 4.45 mmol/l beim britischen Inder (p<0.001). Auch beim Serum-Triglycerid-Wert: 0.82mmol/l beim Inder, 1.37 mmol/l beim britischen Inder. (p<0.006). Allerdings waren die Lipid-Profile von britischen Inder sehr ähnlich wie bei den Kaukasiern, so nämlich, dass andere als Mann britischen Inder einen deutlich höheren Gesamt-Cholesterin-Wert aufwiesen als die Kaukasier, alle anderen Lipid-Unterschiede nicht besonders deutlich ausfielen (p>0.05). Es erscheint deshalb wahrscheinlich, daß Umwelt-Einflüsse wie z.B. Diät, Rauchen und der Alkohol-Verbrauch wichtig für den Aufbau des Körpers sind und ein dementsprechendes Lipid-Profil aufbauen. Diese ersten Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, daß die zweite Generation der Inder, die in Großbritannien leben, den höheren Risiko-Faktor für eine Cardiovascular Erkrankung aufweisen, als die beheimateten Inder. Diese Risiko-Faktoren könnten durch Veränderungen in Bezug auf Diät, Rauchen und Alkohol-Verbrauch wahrscheinlich zum positiven verändert werden. --- Der Vegetarische Charity-Fonds unterstützte Dr. Mehta's Besuch in Indien im Rahmen ihrer medizinischen Ausbildung an einem Londoner Krankenhaus. Die Vegetarische Charity (=Nächstenliebe) wurde mit dem Ziel der Förderung des Vegetarismus unter jungen Leuten bis 25 Jahren und dem Ansinnen, jungen Vegetariern zu helfen, die finanzieller Hilfe bedürftig sind, gegründet. Unterstützungen werden Einzelpersonen gewährt, um ihnen in einer Notlage zu helfen. Unterstützungen werden auch Organisationen gewährt, die jungen Vegetariern in Not helfen. Zur Zeit werden Kinderheim-Anlieferer unterstützt, die vegetarische Kinder in England, Indien und Israel beliefern. Anträge können von überall gestellt werden, aber die Unterstützungen sind für gewöhnlich nicht groß.
