Racconta la storia degli animali riprodotti in fabbriche, i quali, al termine di una lunga serie di sofferenze, finiscono, affettati e fumanti, nel piatto dell'uomo comune di questi ultimi anni del ventesimo secolo. La poesia suggerisce due temi principali. In primo luogo, l'importanza della lotta per dare agli animali il diritto di vivere nelle condizioni più naturali possibili: all'aria aperta piuttosto che fra quattro mura, e liberi di camminare sul terreno piuttosto che fra sbarre metalliche, ecc. Se insistiamo nel trattare gli animali in modo sempre più brutale, questo comportamento renderà la razza umana ancora più brutale. In secondo luogo, l'uomo comune dovrebbe convincersi che gli esseri umani possono vivere molto meglio consumando poca carne -o non consumandone affatto-contando su prodotti come uova e latticini, yogurt, formaggi, formaggio fresco fermentato, keffir ecc. Quanti problemi di salute, quanto inquinamento causato da liquami, quanta emigrazione dovuta alla povertà sarebbero risparmiati se fosse diffusa la coscienza che gli esseri umani non hanno bisogno di trovare energia al prezzo della vita degli animali. Nella poesia intitolata *Un Istante,* Miguel Torga, un grande poeta portoghese, racconta la tenerezza provata nei confronti degli animali. Quando le persone, che non sono scrittori, ma sono più sensibili di questi ultimi, vanno ad un mercato del bestiame bovino, lisciano il fianco della vacca o la testa dell'agnello oppure coccolano un coniglio nel visitare la loro terra d'origine. Come possiamo comprendere l'uomo comune che, subito dopo aver dispensato carezze e buffetti, si siede e si concede un pasto a base di pezzi di animale? Si tratta di qualcosa di paradossale ma comprensibile. Alcuni di noi ricordano i pasti che consumavano da piccoli. Altri, che non una memoria tanto buona, notano ciò che fanno, ancora oggi, tanti genitori. Con carezze, baci e malizie - 'guarda che arriva l'aeroplano' - o con un leggero schiaffo sull'orecchio, introducono nelle bocche dei loro bimbi cibo verso il quale questi ultimi provano spesso la più grande avversione. Che odore, che consistenza! - non è una coincidenza che i bambini rifiutino carne e pesce. Il condizionamento ad un'età tanto tenera, messo in atto da coloro che ci allevano e ci difendono da tanti pericoli, è difficile da perdere.
