In ogni caso, sebbene la sperimentazione su animali, nel percorso della vera scienza e del progresso della medicina, rappresenti una pratica crudele, inutile e pericolosa, che provoca inenarrabili sofferenze e milioni di morti non necessarie - la testazione di farmaci rimane un business remunerativo, che garantisce un alibi perfetto per la commercializzazione di nuovi prodotti, nonostante i loro prevedibili effetti collaterali (spesso sconosciuti) possano essere determinati soltanto quando vengono somministrati all'uomo. Compagnie farmaceutiche come la Phizer Inc. ammettono candidamente che la loro remunerativa ricerca di bacchette magiche può spesso trasformarsi in una roulette russa lontanissima dalle aspettative originarie, ma il business potenziale dei farmaci è l'unica cosa che loro interessi. Un caso significativo è quello del Viagra (benedetto dalla Commissione Scientifica del Vaticano come strumento per migliorare le condizioni familiari), la prima pillola contro l'impotenza maschile messa in commercio dalla Phizer. Nonostante venisse impiegato cinque anni fa per risolvere problemi cardiovascolari legati al blocco delle arterie, il sildenafil, più noto come Viagra, ha avuto un sorprendente effetto collaterale, ben accolto dalla Phizer (giunta in USA a 40.000 prescrizioni quotidiane, a 10 dollari ciascuna ) e, apparentemente, dai potenziali destinatari - qualcosa come 30 milioni di uomini con problemi d'impotenza in USA e 140 milioni in tutto il mondo, ingannati da potenti tecniche di pubblicizzazione e all'oscuro della crescente lista di possibili gravi effetti collaterali, compreso un certo numero di morti attribuite all'uso del Viagra e attualmente sotto inchiesta.
