Ritenevo anche che questa carica meritava una persona più dinamica per far fronte a problemi come la povertà, la disoccupazione e la malnutrizione, che ostacolano la crescita di un vigoroso movimento vegetariano. Linden, Sudafrica.* *\[In segno di apprezzamento dei suoi molti anni di servizio, l'IVU ha nominato Jan Beeldman Membro Onorario e membro a vita.\]* --- ### Antica erba cinese fa miracoli in Tailandia Sono sopravvissuta al cancro e vorrei raccontarvi come un'esperienza indimenticabile mi ha insegnato l'importanza della salute. Dopo aver raggiunto il pozzo nero della vita, con dolori in tutto il corpo, afflitta da una tosse continua e incapace di mangiare o uscire con gli amici, con l'aiuto di un interprete ho chiesto consiglio a un medico cinese appena arrivato. Mi raccontò di un'antica erba cinese chiamata Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphylum) che aveva recato giovamento a molti dei suoi pazienti e un amico me ne portò un po' dalla Cina per piantarla e crescerla con tecniche biologiche. Dopo aver bevuto la tisana quotidianamente per parecchie settimane, sia io che gli anziani vicini con cui condividevo questo rituale ci sentivamo bene e riuscivamo a dormire meglio. Dopo sei mesi mi sentivo meno stressata e cominciai a perdere parte del peso che in precedenza non ero stata in grado di ridurre nonostante molta ginnastica. Fui così incoraggiata dagli effetti positivi di quest erba che cominciai a raccogliere relazioni, articoli, risultati di ricerche e qualsiasi informazione riuscissi a trovare. In questo mi aiutarono gli amici che piantarono i germogli che diedi loro e diventarono regolari consumatori dell'erba. Presentai anche alcuni campioni dell'erba alla Food and Drug Administration \[l'ente americano per l'approvazione dei medicinali, n.d.t.\]. Otto anni dopo mi sento sana, forte e piena di energia, in grado di godermi la vita e di condividere con tutti l'incalcolabile beneficio e la benedizione che quest erba miracolosa ha portato a me e a molti altri.
