Il rifugio, che si trova nel Cambridgeshire in Gran Bretagna, è diretto da vegani ed accoglie animali maltrattati, malati o abbandonati, che, secondo i loro precedenti proprietari, non valevano nemmeno il costo delle cure veterinarie o di una morte indolore. Felicemente inconsapevoli di quella che sarebbe potuta essere la loro sorte, gli animali, che nemmeno dopo la morte seguiranno un simile destino, ricevono le cure necessarie e, una volta recuperata la salute, rispondono ai loro nomi e possono godere a pieno della vita. Il rifugio è finanziato per intero da donazioni e da adozioni perché, evidentemente, disfare il lavoro di chi sfrutta gli animali non è considerato un'opera di beneficenza e quindi non gode di alcuna esenzione fiscale. La struttura accoglie 500 ospiti tanto fortunati da essere riusciti a sfuggire al coltello del macellaio, alle condizioni disumane e al trattamento degradante riservato a molti altri del loro genere. Sono i bambini ad apprezzare in modo particolare il programma di adozione e le foto e lettere che ricevono a nome degli animali adottati. Tra gli animali adottabili (vedi foto) c'è Wiggy, enorme affettuosissimo maiale che, mentre mi guardavo intorno, ha interrotto il suo tranquillo sonnellino per venirmi a salutare, togliendomi ogni dubbio su chi scegliere. Comunque, se questo furbetto fuggiasco, trovato sfinito ed affamato mentre correva lungo una strada, non risultasse il vostro preferito, una visita alla fattoria vi offrirà numerose opportunità di incontrare l’animale speciale che vi conquisterà. Mickey, amabile montone, adora esser accarezzato; Miss Piggy, coscienziosa mangiatrice, ha smesso un attimo di masticare per fare un cenno di saluto; Geraldine, dolce pecora che apprezza la compagnia umana ma preferisce mantenersi a distanza; Gromit, bel vitello abbandonato; Remus, montone che quando è stato tolto dalle mani di un trasportatore aveva una zampa irrecuperabilmente fratturata ora ha solo tre zampe ma sembra inconsapevole del proprio handicap; Sarah, pecora eliminata da un allevamento perché non era più fertile; Luckdragon, giovane agnello dal dolce carattere, nato prematuramente e trovato in una siepe dove la madre l'aveva lasciato dopo esser stata spaventata da dei cacciatori; e molti, molti altri. Che sia a causa della fama, della fortuna o della soddisfazione di bisogni reali o immaginari, se confrontiamo la comune visione umana dell'Utopia - come versione modificata del mondo antropocentrico artificiale che conosciamo e abbiamo contribuito a creare - con l'equilibrio simbiotico delicatamente bilanciato del rapporto tra animali non-umani, ambiente, fonti di cibo e complessi sistemi sociali, il loro più ardente desiderio, purtroppo ancora irrealizzato, risulterà senz'altro essere la visione di un pianeta privo di qualunque segno di vita umana, oppure un luogo abitato solo da quegli appassionati volontari che gestiscono i santuari, dove possono essere curati, e il cui amore ed attenzione riempia le loro vite del significato e del valore perduti nel diventare macchine produttrici di carne, latte o lana. Gli animali non-umani non dovrebbero subire le conseguenze della nostra incapacità nello sfruttare le doti di esseri compassionevoli e caritatevoli in grado di estendere i nostri confini etici.
