Helen Steel y Dave Morris, los dos afectados, eran parados y no poseían bienes de modo que no pueden abonar ninguna sentencia que el tribunal pueda dictar en caso de encontrarles culpables. La mayoría de las personas amenazadas mediante acción judicial han tenido que disculparse por ser incapaces de permitirse el riesgo de tener que pagar grandes sumas en gastos judiciales y compensaciones si el caso fuese ganado por McDonalds. Por supuesto, McDonalds, una organización masiva internacional posee los recursos para combatir cualquier acción. El juicio empezó en junio de 1994 y se esperaba que duraría hasta el otoño de 1996. En diciembre de 1995 se convirtió en el proceso civil más largo de la historia legal británica. Se entiende que McDonalds ha intentado terminar con la acción por la publicidad negativa y los problemas debidos a las constatadas evidencias presentadas por los dos acusados que dañan la imagen de McDonalds. Un total de aproximadamente 180 testigos, nacionales e internacionales (incluyendo al Dr. Neal Barnard y a Howard Lyman que está actualmente compareciendo) han sido citados como testigos a los efectos de las operaciones de la empresa sobre el medio ambiente, sobre millones de cabezas de ganado, sobre la salud humana, sobre el Tercer Mundo y sobre el propio equipo directivo de McDonalds. McDonalds está tan preocupada sobre el modo en que el caso está repercutiendo sobre ellos y la mala publicidad, que han enviado en dos ocasiones a miembros de la Junta de Dirección de los Estados Unidos a Londres para entrevistarse con los acusados y buscar formas de concluir el proceso. Todavía no está claro cuándo finalizará el proceso pero sigue consiguiendo una buena publicidad para el movimiento animal y una mala publicidad para McDonalds.
