Cuenta la historia de los animales criados en las granjas industriales, que después de una larga cadena de sufrimiento, terminan desmenuzados y humeantes en el plato de cualquier persona en estos últimos años del siglo veinte. El poema sugiere dos temas principales. El primero, la importancia de la lucha por darle a los animales el derecho a vivir en las condiciones más naturales posibles: al aire libre en lugar de entre cuatro paredes y con la posibilidad de caminar en la tierra en lugar de en rejas de metal etc. Si insistimos en tratar a los animales más y más brutalmente, este comportamiento hará aun más cruel la raza humana. Lo segundo, el ciudadano común debe convencerse de que los seres humanos pueden vivir mucho mejor consumiendo poca o nada de carne, dependiendo de productos derivados como los huevos y los productos lácteos, yoghurt, queso, queso cottage, etc. Cuántos problemas de salud, cuánta contaminación a causa del drenaje, cuánta emigración causada por la pobreza sería aliviada si fuera divulgada la conciencia de que los humanos no necesitan reunir sus fuerzas a costa de la vida de un animal. En el poema llamado *Un Instante* un gran poeta portugués, Miguel Torga, nos demuestra la ternura que siente por los animales. Con caricias, besos y mañas -mira ahí va un avioncito- o con un ligero estirón de orejas, empacan con comida las bocas de sus niños, con comida a la que sienten mayor aversión. ¡Qué olor, qué textura! - no es ninguna coincidencia que los niños rechacen la carne y el pescado. El acondicionamiento en tan tierna edad por aquellos que nos nutren y defienden de cualquier peligro no es fácil de perder.
