Las etiquetas indicaban: Freedom Food - controlado por RSPCA, pero también podían indicar aprobado, porque seguramente eso es lo que la mayoría de la gente entenderá que significa. Puedo aceptar que el núcleo de la idea del Freedom Food puede haber sido un sincero deseo con la mejor de las intenciones para mejorar las espantosas condiciones sufridas por la mayoría de los animales de granja en Gran Bretaña. Sin embargo, conlleva enviar un mensaje confuso a los consumidores de carne y hacer sugerir a los vegetarianos que comer carne es aceptable de cierto modo, particularmente si aparentemente tiene el sello de aprobación de la más ampliamente conocida y respetada sociedad de bienestar animal. Opino, por tanto, que este irreflexivo y éticamente defectuoso esquema tendrá el efecto de aprobar el consumo de carne y como mínimo reavivar el decadente mercado de la carne en el justo momento en que la gente sensible está empezando a alejarse, especialmente por motivos de salud, de la práctica de comer animales muertos. En lugar de alentar un estilo de vida sano y sin crueldad, la RSPCA está animando a sus miembros y al público en general a comprar carne Freedom Food. Esto presumiblemente significa que ahora se puede comer con la conciencia tranquila manjares como cerdo, pollo, vacuno, jamón, huevos, salchichas, cordero y, aunque no lo creas, el último producto en recibir el sello de aprobación es la ternera, que había sido casi el símbolo de crueldad por antonomasia en la mentalidad británica hasta ahora, al menos. Se dijo que se esperaba obtener beneficios de este esquema, pero abundan los rumores de enormes pérdidas que sólo pueden ir en perjuicio de todos los animales. Los críticos del sistema son ridiculizados por no vivir en el mundo real o esperar que todo el mundo se vuelva vegano de la noche a la mañana y se arriesgan a ser expulsados de la sociedad. No obstante, muchos creen firmemente, como yo, que se ha originado un trágico error a partir de un genuino deseo de aliviar el sufrimiento de los animales. Lo que es más extraño, se reveló que el esquema de Freedom Food es totalmente superfluo, como una mera réplica de un esquema similar administrado por la Soil Association, el organismo que regula los alimentos biológicos. ¿Por qué, se pregunta uno, no podía la RSPCA haber colaborado con este grupo, especialmente cuando parece ahora que los códigos de bienestar estipulados por la RSPCA son menos rigurosos que los de la Soil Association? Y en lo que respecta a especificar los estándares de bienestar para los animales, estoy seguro de que el compromiso será la regla inevitable y los ganaderos tendrán demasiada influencia. Es difícil comprender cómo una organización ya sobrecargada puede empezar a controlar las normas de acá para allá por todas las granjas del país. Sin embargo, la RSPCA afirma haber conseguido una mejoría significativa para las vidas de más de 10 millones de animales desde el inicio del esquema. ¿Y si Freedom Food no es emprendida por los grandes comerciantes alimentarios? ¿Veremos a la RSPCA abriendo carnicerías? ¿Y después qué más? Con esta línea de pensamiento, ¿podemos esperar la llegada de Freedom Fur (Pieles de Libertad) y Vivisección sin Crueldad? ¿A dónde llegará todo esto? Una desafortunada idea diseñada para beneficiar a todos los animales podría tan fácilmente convertirse en un espeluznante vehículo para asegurar la continuación de su abuso. Os ruego que no permitáis que esto suceda en vuestro país. Cuando el esquema Freedom Food fue endosado a los miembros de la RSPCA en una asamblea general no hubo oposición fuerte debido a que nos pilló a todos desprevenidos. Ninguna de las principales figuras del movimiento de derechos animales habló para condenar el esquema o amenazó con luchar contra él si seguía adelante. Si deseáis detener esquemas similares en vuestro país, os sugiero que emprendáis las siguientes acciones: - Asociaos a los principales grupos de bienestar/derechos de los animales. - Obtened las agendas de su asamblea general anual. - Alertad a aquellos miembros del movimiento cuyas voces tienen peso sobre cualquier propuesta que suscite inquietudes (esas personas deben también pertenecer a los grupos de bienestar y estar dispuestos a asistir a las asambleas). - Asistid a las asambleas y animad a otros a hablar en contra de los esquemas que promuevan el consumo de carne y que por tanto no tendrán ningún beneficio a largo plazo para los animales. Estad alerta: no permitáis que vuestros grupos de protección animal se metan en la cama con los ganaderos y nunca jamás permitáis que el nombre de una sociedad animal aparezca sobre un trozo de carne en una carnicería. Los progresos significativos en las condiciones de los animales de granja se consiguen mejor persuadiendo a más y más gente a dejar de comérselos, como todos sabemos. Hasta ese momento en que alcancemos nuestra meta, recomiendo enérgicamente el apoyo a organizaciones tales como Compassion in World Farming (Compasión en la Ganadería Mundial)(activa en el Reino Unido, Irlanda y Francia), que buscan mejorar los niveles de bienestar mediante la reforma de las leyes y ofreciendo información a la gente para que puedan emplear su poder de consumidores. Entonces no hay necesidad de ningún esquema de etiquetado que relacione los productos animales con los grupos de bienestar animal y puede evitarse la trampa en la que la RSPCA ha caído quizás inconscientemente. --- Toda contribución a IVU News será bienvenida.
