En un principio no creía que la crueldad hacia los animales, a pesar de la importancia que tiene en sí misma, algún día se convertiría en un punto de gran relevancia para los cristianos. Pensaba, es un asunto importante, pero secundario. Ahora no. Lo que hacemos con millones de animales, en términos de dolor, sufrimiento y muerte, constituye, creo yo, una de las principales cuestiones morales de todos los tiempos. Por otra parte, ahora veo que va directo al corazón del evangelio que profesan los Cristianos. Esto es el evangelio del amor invencible, inconquistable de Dios - no sólo para los seres humanos sino para todas las criaturas. El Dios de Abraham, de Isaac, de Jacob y especialmente de Jesús, ama a todas las criaturas. Los Cristianos debemos encontrar un nuevo corazón - un corazón lo suficientemente grande para abrirse a dos grandes verdades evangélicas. La primera es que los animales son criaturas de Dios: no propiedad humana, no herramientas, no recursos, no mercancías, sino seres preciosos a la vista de Dios. La segunda es la similitud del sufrimiento de Jesús con el de los animales. "Piensen entonces, mis hermanos", predicó John Henry Newman en Oxford 1842, "en lo que sienten cuando se enfrentan a la crueldad que se practica en los animales, y vivirán un sentimiento semejante al que la historia de la Cruz de Cristo y la Pasión deben despertar dentro de ustedes". Los Cristianos que tienen la mirada fija en el horror de la Crucifixión están en posición de entender el horror del sufrimiento inocente. La Cruz de Jesús es la identificación absoluta con el débil, el impotente y el vulnerable, pero más que nada con el sufrimiento del desprotegido, indefenso, inocente. He hablado de cómo la sensibilidad al sufrimiento debe ser un asunto de obediencia al evangelio. Pero, en realidad, es entre los Cristianos donde ahora nos encontramos la traición más grande a este evangelio. En España, no se puede encontrar ni una sola autoridad Católica Romana que se oponga a las corridas de toros. En Canadá, los obispos Anglicanos y Católico-Romanos apoyan la cacería de focas y otros animales por sus pieles. En Noruega, el clérigo defiende la cacería de ballena. En Irlanda, los sacerdotes Católico-Romanos van a las carreras de liebres. Y en Inglaterra el Sínodo General de la Iglesia de Inglaterra no se opone a la cacería por deporte en tierras de la Iglesia. Esta traición tiene una larga y poco aduladora historia. Desde el siglo IX al siglo XIX, miles de animales han sido sujetos a procesos criminales y sentenciados a la pena capital por cortes eclesiásticas, resultando en una crueldad bárbara. Aún a mediados del siglo XIX el Papa Pío IX prohibió la apertura de una oficina que se dedicaría a la protección de los animales en Roma, basándose en el supuesto hecho de que los animales no tienen ningún valor intrínseco, y en la idea de que lo que hacemos con ellos no necesita ser gobernado por consideraciones morales fundamentales, esto se ha vuelto la teología estándar en los países Católicos. Un Dios que permanece apático frente al sufrimiento inocente simplemente no puede ser un Dios Cristiano. Ninguna teología que nos desensibilice del sufrimiento puede ser una teología verdaderamente Cristiana. No se puede enfatizar lo suficiente que la imagen de Dios que se interesa exclusivamente por la salvación humana y es indiferente al sufrimiento de la creación no humana se ha convertido en una fuente de desesperación moral. Si los Cristianos hoy día se preocupan tan poco por los animales, es porque al Dios en el que parecen creer le importa todavía menos. Por mi parte, yo creo que **si Dios es bueno, justo y santo, cabe esperar que haya redención para cada una de las criaturas que sufre. Nada menos que eso haría a Dios un Dios verdaderamente justo.** Cuando el Dr. Linzey fue invitado a hablar en Madrid, la Reina de España quedó tan impresionada que solicitó asistir a una de sus charlas y subsecuentemente le concedió una audiencia para seguir hablando con él. Aparentemente no había encontrado a nadie como él en la Iglesia Española, aunque son bastante necesarios.
