Si bien ambos animales pertenecen a la clase carnívoros, esto no significa mucho ya que el oso panda pertenece a la misma clase y es casi vegano. En la naturaleza, los perros y los gatos no comerían nada parecido a lo que comúnmente se encuentra en una lata de comida para mascotas. Los gatos requieren de una dieta especial ya que necesitan de un aminoácido llamado taurina -- que se encuentra en los músculos de los animales. Existe taurina sintética y se usa comercialmente en alimentos comerciales (no vegetarianos) para gatos. Este aminoácido se debe suministrar a los gatos en forma de suplemento, ya que la deficiencia del mismo puede causar ceguera e incluso la muerte. Los gatos también necesitan vitamina A pre-formada y ácido araquidónico. Todas las comidas veganas para gatos conocidas contienen estos ingredientes esenciales y las compañías listadas más abajo los proveen en sus alimentos para gatos. Si le preocupa la salud de su gato, consulte con el veterinario sobre los cambios en la dieta. No sólo es POSIBLE, sino que también es DESEABLE alimentar a perros y gatos con una dieta libre de carne. Comprar comida para mascotas “normal” es apoyar a la misma industria de la carne con la crueldad, la explotación, el desecho y el daño ambiental al que tanto se opone el veganismo. ¿Por qué habrían de sufrir y morir diez caballos/vacas/pollos/patos o cualquier animal cada año, sólo para alimentar a su perro/gato? Esta no es una cuestión de “imponer sus creencias” a sus mascotas (o animales de compañía o como los quiera llamar) ya que no los está forzando a comer una determinada comida ni les está prohibiendo comer la fauna local de su vecindario. Aparte los animales no tienen moral ni creencias. Hacen lo necesario por sobrevivir, sin preferencias sobre el impacto sobre esto o aquello. Nosotros, en cambio, podemos tomar decisiones morales/éticas - como la decisión de ser veganos. En la naturaleza, sobrevivir significa “matar algo o morir de hambre”, pero si su mascota está siendo alimentada, esto se vuelve innecesario. No es menos natural darle comida vegana a su gato o a su perro, que darle cualquier otra cosa. Primero, el gato/perro domesticado guarda muy poco parecido con sus primos salvajes, así que ya es una situación artificial. Segundo, el acto de alimentarlo de una lata o de una bolsa (en lugar de dejarlo buscar su propia comida) es muy poco natural, así que podríamos tratar de sacar lo mejor de esta situación. Tercero, el contenido real de las latas de comida para mascotas no tiene ninguna semejanza con lo que un gato o un perro comería en su estado salvaje…¿Puede imaginarse a su gatito mimoso matando caballos o buceando para pescar atún? Lo mismo se aplica al uso de insectos muertos para broches, alas de insectos trituradas para sombras de ojos brillantes e insectos agonizantes para frijoles brincadores. ¿Por qué promover, incluso a este nivel, un duro desprecio por los seres vivos que nos rodean? Por una buena razón, basada en la intuición ética, nos impresiona más un alma amable y caritativa que atrapa a las moscas con una red y luego las suelta vivas fuera de la casa que una persona que las caza para darles una muerte química con una botella de Raid. Incluso si nuestro gran cazador blanco arrabalero de moscas utiliza un matamoscas por razones ecológicas, el curso más admirable es el de la persona que utiliza una red de mariposas simplemente para capturar las moscas y luego soltarlas afuera.
