Su advertencia se volvió profética: el complejo industrial-militar creció en proporciones gigantescass y devastó nuestra economía nacional. Mató a miles de jovenes americanos y otros incontables. Casi se lleva la vida del planeta con la nube nuclear. Le tomó 40 años al pueblo americano entender completamente el terrible peligro que implicaba y empezar a desmantelar al mounstruo que había ayudado a crear. En los 70's los líderes del movimiento vegetariano alertaron a la gente de una amenaza aún más formidable.El complejo industrial de la carne. Como su predecesor, la industria de la carne, alimenta la codicia humana matando seres vivos y destruyendo su ambiente. Pero, a diferencia de su predecesor, la industria de la carne, no espera por guerras o fallos diplomáticos. Conducido por el superávit de granos, subsidios gubernamentales, campañas promocionales desilucionantes y la apatía del consumidor, lleva a cabo su misión mortall cada minuto de cada d'ia de cada año, hasta cuando hablamos. Su poder destructivo embrolla a la mente. Cada año la industria de la carne abusa de y masacra cerca de nueve billones de vacas, puercos, pavos, pollos y otros animales inocentes con sentimientos para el consumo humano. Cada año la industria de la carne gasta millones de granos que deberían estar alimentando a los millones de hambrientos. Merma suelo irremplazable, aguas y otros recursos cr'iticos para la producción de comida. Envenena la tierra y agua con pesticidas, fertilizantes y otras sustancias tóxicas. Diezma la vida silvestre y extermina nuestros bosques y otros habitats silvestres. **La Caida de la Industria de la Carne** Y ahora buenas noticias, y lo están oyendo aquí primero, en esta ocasión historica. El año 1996 pasará a la historia como el pricipio del fín de la industria de la carne. Despues de 4 décadas de crecimiento estable, la producción de carne está debilitandose y empezando un largo desenso. Las razones son irreversibles e inevitables.: 1. Por el creciente poder adquisitivo de los paises en desarrollo, las reservas de granos han llegado a su nivel más bajo en la historia moderna, levantando los precios a records altísimos 2. El mecanismo de balance del presupuesto federal está severamente limitando los subsidios federales. 3. La aceptación pública de la dieta sin carne ha alcanzado niveles sin precedente con provedores de comida importantes como Conagra, Green Giant, Denny's y Subway compitiendo por este mercado. 4. La promoción de la alimentación basada en plantas de grupos de a poyo con tendencias a la salud, y la incapacidad del gobierno a responder por la seguridad de la carne, promete expandir este mercado aún más. Sorprendentemente, a diferencia de su predecesor, la industria de la carne de EU parece tener un deseo de muerte que lo lleva a cooperar ocn su propio facecimiento. De que otra manera puede uno tomar tan bizarro comportamiento: - a) A pesar de los tan predecidos cortes en los granos, la industria no tomó medidas para reducir la producción hasta este año, causando dislocaciones económicas a lo largo y ancho. - b) A pesar de la importancia vital de los campos para la industria del ganado, la industria ha presionado al gobierno federal para reducir los impuestos de pastoreo, acelerando la devastación de estas tierras. - c) A pesar de su dependencia crítica en los productores que crian a sus animales y asumen la mayoría de los riesgos, la industria ha hecho su situación económica virtualmente insostenible. - d) A pesar de la severa contaminación de agua y aire causada por las granjas de puercos, la industria del puerco se ha expandido al punto de ser ahora severamente restringida en muchos estados. - e) A pesar de que los insectos y patógenos están ganando batallas hermanas contra nuevos pesticidas y antibióticos,, la industria continua usando crecientes cantidades de ambos. - f) A pesar del 25% de pérdidas en ventas, le tomó a la industria de la carne 20años para conocer y tratar de repara su problema de colesterol. - g) A pesar de que los pollos de supermercado traen niveles sustanciales de salmonela, que enferma a millones y mata a miles, la industria de la carne se opuso a un programa de inspección de la USDA - i) Y hablando de cosas británicas, la demanda legal de McLibel se ha vuelto un desastre de realciones públicas para el proveedor mas grande de animales muertos. - j) A pesar de que el 93% de los consumidores americanos se oponene al sufrimiento de los animales de granja, la industria de la carne de los EU presiono a 28 legislaturas para que excluyeran a los animales de granja de sus estatutos anti-crueldad. - k) Y, apesar de sus pérdidas del 70% debido a sus inhumanas e insalubres prácticas, la industria de la ternera prefirió irse a la baja a prohibir ese maldito embalaje de ternera. Ahora, tiene la industria de la carne un deseo de muerte o que? **Cómo podemos ayudar** Le estoy pididendo a cada uno de ustedes eta noche aquí, como como preocupados, compasivos activistas, a dar su apoyo total a la industria de la carne...para que cumpla su deseo de muerte. *Aquí está como pueden ayudar:* - Hablen por medio de cartas a los editores, en programas de discuciónde como la alimentación basada en plantas promueve la buena salud, reduce los gastos médicos, preserva el ambiente limpio y elimina el sufrimiento a los animales. - Muestren su mensaje en playeras, calcomanias, bolsas, y botones. - Agradezcan a los fabricantes, supermercados, restaurantes, hoteles, aerolineas y otras instituciones que cuidan al mercado consumidor de plantas.
