--- title: "World Vegetarian Congress 1986 - Minutes of the IVU General Meeting - IVU - International Vegetarian Union" description: "World Vegetarian Congress 1986 - Minutes of the IVU General Meeting: Minutes of the IVU General Meeting International Vegetarian Union Minutes of the General Meeting of representatives of member societies held at various times during the 28th World Vegetarian Congress at the Croatia Hotel, Cavtat," url: "https://ivu.org/international-vegetarian-union/resources/interviews/4207-congress-wvc86-minutes.html" date: "2026-11-06T00:21:47+00:00" language: "en-GB" --- # World Vegetarian Congress 1986 - Minutes of the IVU General Meeting ![World Vegetarian Congress 1986 - Minutes of the IVU General Meeting](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/banners/congress-wvc86-minutes.png) Minutes of the IVU General Meeting **International Vegetarian Union** Minutes of the General Meeting of representatives of member societies held at various times during the 28th World Vegetarian Congress at the Croatia Hotel, Cavtat, Yugoslavia, 25th march to 3rd April, 1986. 1. **President's Welcome** The President, Dr Gordon Latto, commented on the support for the Congress, welcomed everyone and expressed the view that the Congress would be very interesting and enjoyable. 2. **Meeting Procedures** The Hon.General Secretary, Mr M.G.Lee, explained the procedures that would be adopted during the business meetings and pointed out that only official delegates of member societies were allowed to vote but that all participants could join in the discussion. 3. **Apologies for Absence** A number of apologies were read together with messages of goodwill. 4. **Minutes** The minutes of the meeting of representatives of member societies held at the 27th World Congress in Baltimore, U.S.A. were presented and approved as a correct account of the meeting. 5. **Matters Arising** None were raised. 6. **Hon.General Secretary's Report** The Hon.General Secretary, Mr.M.G.Lee, stated that he was encouraged by the increasing interest in vegetarianism and the growth of activity in various parts of the world. He mentioned the development of a regional organisation in Australasia and its activity as well as the increased number of member societies and individuals in the United States. He particularly stressed the massive growth of vegetarianism in the United Kingdom and the development of the European Vegetarian Union which aimed to organise regional congresses and encourage the development of more vegetarian societies in Europe. 7. **Hon Treasurer's Report** In the absence of the Hon.Treasurer, the Hon.General Secretary presented the audited accounts for the period 1st April, 1984 to 31st December, 1985. As the World Congress was taking place before the end of the financial year, the Hon.Treasurer had prepared accounts up to the end of the previous calendar year. At the end of the financial year 1984-5 the total assets of I.V.U. amounted to £21,344.22 which compared favourably with the figure of £10,433 at 31st March, 1984. This was partly due to the transfer of £8,353.44 from the Manker Fund account in Antwerp to the I.V.U. account in Britain. The financial report and list of member societies and individual members were approved. It was agreed that the Hon.Auditor, Mr.James F.Burton, should be thanked for his services and reappointed for the period until the next World Congress. 8. **Subscription Rates** After some discussion it was agreed to increase the subscription rates from 1st January, 1987 as follows:- Member Societies for up to 150 members from £5 to £7, for up to 650 members from £15 to £25 with £15 per additional 500 members up to a maximum of £100. Individual members' rates should rise from £5 top £10 and for Associate Members from £7.50 to £10. The rate of donation for a Patron was increased from £50 to £100. 9. **Regional Secretaries' Reports**Africa | The Hon.General Secretary read the report in the absence of Mr Jan Beeldman. He reported growing interest in vegetarianism in South Africa and regretted that there was no representative of South Africa at the Congress due to organisational problems in Yugoslavia. | Australasia | Mr Fred Whittle gave a report in the absence of Mr George Karolyi. He reported on the growth in activity and the holding of a regional congress and brought greetings from his region. | |---|---|---| | Europe | Professor Marcel Hebbelinck gave the report in the absence of Dr Jacqueline Andre. He mentioned the development of the European Vegetarian Union and the proposal to hold another European Congress in Belgium in 1987 following the successful one held in Italy in 1985. He mentioned growing interest in various countries. | | India and the East | Mr Surendra Mehta commented on the problems resulting from attempts to mislead young people in India into thinking non vegetarian foods were good for health. The vegetarian movement was opposing the growth in the number of slaughter houses. In Sri Lanka there were problems for vegetarians due to the unrest. He reported a growth in publishing activity and that Dr.Bhamgara was publishing his various works. | | Latin America | Mr Joaquin Him reported on behalf of Dr.German Alberti. There was considerable enthusiasm in the region for the proposed world congress in Mexico in 1988. In addition they were holding the 6th Latin American congress in 1986. | | Middle East | No report | | North America | Mr Mitch Darer reported in behalf of Mr Brian Graff. He mentioned the hopes for the development of activity in North America and the way in which concern was growing over the treatment of animals. 2. **Reports of Member Societies** Reports were presented from the following Societies:- VSUK, Toronto, Vegetarier Bund Deutschlands, Associazione Italiana Vegetariana, American Vegan Society, Indian Vegetarian Congress, Vegetarian Information Service, Danish Vegetarian Society, Vegetarian Society of Ireland, Svenska Vegetariska Foreningen, Vegetarian Society of South Australia, Israel Vegetarian Movement, DDR Vegetarierfreunde, Vegetarian Society of Ulster, ASCUVINA Panama, Yugoslav Vegetarian Society, T.E.V.A., Polish Vegetarian Society, Washington D.C. Vegetarian Society, Australian Vegan Society, Vegan Society U.K., Israeli Nature and Health, Nederlandse Vegetariersbond, Info Vegetarisma ASBL, Belgium, A.L.A. There was a vote of delegates and it was decided to accept the offer of Israel. India was thanked for its kind offer. 5. **1988 World Congress** There being no delegates from Mexico at the Congress Mr Joaquin Him had telephoned Mexico to obtain information. He reported that the Mexican vegetarians were continuing with their plans but there was little information available for the assembly. It was agreed that should it not prove possible for the congress to continue in Mexico then either Israel or India should be asked to put on a congress in 1988. 6. **Organisation of Congresses** There was some discussion of the problems which could arise over the organisation of congresses, especially where there was little or no previous experience of such events. It was agreed that any further ideas should be sent to the Hon.General Secretary for him to report to the next World Congress. 7. **Reverence for Life Month** Mrs Madge Darneille reiterated the purpose of Reverence for Life Month. She emphasised that suitable days for the celebration varied from country to country and that there were various days in the month of October that were relevant. What was important was that there should be as much activity as possible in all countries. 8. **Manker Foundation and Trophy** It was announced that Mr N.John le Grice had been awarded the trophy for his outstanding services to vegetarianism in the United Kingdom and in I.V.U. The delegates were reminded of the reasons for the Manker Fund and asked to encourage donations to it so that I.V.U. could extend its work in all parts of the world. 9. **Patrons' Fund** Delegates were reminded that this was a valuable way of showing support for I.V.U., that it ensured their continuing connection with I.V.U. and that the donations were used to further the work. 10. **Membership** Delegates were asked to encourage all vegetarian groups in their countries to join I.V.U.. The Hon.General Secretary emphasised that I.V.U.'s strength came from its members. The greater the number the more influential I.V.U. would be. 11. **Future Role and Policy of I.V.U.** Everyone was encouraged to think about the role and purpose of I.V.U. and to send in their ideas to members of the International Council or the Hon.General Secretary. 12. **Votes of Thanks** The President thanked everyone for their attendance and support and the Hon.General Secretary for his work for I.V.U. and suggested that I.V.U. owed a debt of gratitude to the Hon.General Secretary. The President thanked Mr.Surendra Mehta for his help in his new role as Deputy President. He also asked the assembly to agree a vote of thanks to the congress organisers. 13. **Any Other Business** The Hon.General Secretary thanked the President for his kind words and support. It was agreed that there might be a tree planting ceremony should it prove possible to organise this. It was agreed that I.V.U. might give some financial support to the Yugoslav Vegetarian Society due to the expected loss on the Congress. This would be considered when full accounts had been received.
