J. Buxey invites the World Vegetarian Congress and all true animal lovers to consider the debasing practice of the export of monkeys from India for vivisectional purposes. He quotes from Dean Inge that "The great discovery of the 19th century that we are of one blood with lower animals has created new ethical obligations which have not yet penetrated the public conscience. As compared with the export of 20,000 monkeys in 1953, 120,000 were exported in 1956, and the Government had agreed for that years to export 25,000. To what purpose? That they be exposed to the horrors of Radio-active clouds, atomic and high explosive blasts, poison gasses. "They are shot forty miles above the surface of the earth in rockets and exposed to Radon seeds implanted in the brain. Parachuted from plastic balloons they are subject to cosmic rays over fifteen miles in space above the earth," They are injected with every type of germ including syphilis. Electrical and chemical stimuli are applied to the brain. Mr. Buxey tells of the terrible conditions in which they are transported, authenticating his statements with many quotations from the daily papers. Literally hundreds of every consignment never reach their destination. On March 20, 1957 over 500 monkeys were emptied into the jungle of Purana Qila, new Delhi, because a disease had broken out. The Hindustan Times of 28th March reported "hundreds of broken skulls, limbs, and whole carcasses of monkeys in varying stated of decay over an area of about two square miles." Actually the discrepancy runs into thousands between the monkeys captured for exportation and those actually exported, claims the same paper of 30th March. After reviewing many of the horrors of vivisection, especially in cancer research, the words of Dr. Albert Schweitzer are quoted: "Until we extend our circle of compassion to include every living creature, we cannot enjoy world peace." Mr. Rusey adapts a poem of Ella Wheeler Wilcox : > We are the voice of the voiceless; > Through us the dumb, shall speak; > Till the deaf world's ear be made to hear > The cry of the wordless weak. > From street. from cage, and from 'Lab', > From jungle and stall, the wail > Of our tortured kin proclaims the sin > Of the mighty against the frail. "Let the soul lend its ear to every cry of pain like as the Lotus bares its heart to drink the morning sun.
