Juli fast ausschließlich in Eden statt. Lediglich am 14. und 15. Juli waren Veranstaltungen in Hamburg vorgesehen. Hatten die Edener auch alles Erdenkliche getan, um durch zahlreiche kulturelle Veranstaltungen, z.B. das von der Edener Heimatbühne aufgeführte Festspiel “Apollonius von Tyana” von Karl Bartes, dem Kongress einen würdigen Rahmen zu verleihen, so tat sich auf diesem internationalen Treffen der Vegetarier ein unüberwindlich scheinender Gegensatz auf, der auch an Eden nicht spurlos vorüberging. ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/congress/wvc32/pics/eden2.jpg) Den Anlass für die noch monatelang anhaltende Diskussion lieferten die kontroversen Auffassungen zweier Persönlichkeiten in weltanschaulichen Fragen, die geradezu zu einer Polarisierung des Kongresses führten. Hauptkontrahenten waren zum einen der katholische Grazer Theologe Professor Johannes Ude, ein typischer Vertreter des dogmatischen und eurozentrischen Kirchenchristentums, und zum anderen der aus der Schweiz stammende freiheitliche “Weltvagant” und Lebensreformer Werner Zimmermann, der sich Gott auch in anderen Religionen und Lebensformen als nur in der christlichen äußern sah. ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/congress/wvc32/pics/eden5.jpg) Schon die Themen der von den beiden gehaltenen Vorträge offenbarten ihre Geisteshaltungen. Ging es Ude in seinem Vortrag “Vegetarismus als Schutzdamm gegen das hereinbrechende Chaos” darum, diesen gegen “die sich heranwälzenden Sturmfluten der sozialen Revolution zu instrumentalisieren, so versuchte Zimmermann unter dem Thema “Vegetarismus als Weltreform und die Einstellung Japans, Chinas, Indiens und Amerikas zum Vegetarismus”, den Zuhörern seine Beobachtungen über vegetarisch lebende außereuropäische Völker zu vermitteln. Werner Zimmermann rief mit diesem Vortrag und seinem Auftreten – “beinah nackt, braunhäutig, naturnahe, eher spielerisch als kämpferisch . . . ohne Dogma, ohne Vorurteil” - nicht nur “das Entzücken aller freiheitsdürstenden Jugendlichen” hervor, sondern auch der afrikanische Vertreter auf dem Kongress, Bascomba, äußerte sich fasziniert über Zimmermann: “Heute, als Werner Zimmermann sprach, fühlte ich mich zum ersten Mal wohl in Europa. Ich hätte nie geglaubt, dass unter Weißen ein solcher Mensch gefunden werden könnte. Aus ihm strahlt die Liebe, von der die Christen heuchlerisch bloß reden” . Professor Ude, im Gegensatz zu Zimmermann auf dem Kongress bei großer Hitze übrigens in schwarzer Soutane, zugeknöpft bis zum Hals auftretend, versuchte noch Wochen nach dem Kongress, ein kleinliches Gezänk über Zimmermanns Sexualauffassungen zu entfachen und ihn als “Jugendverführer” zu verunglimpfen. “Eden ist wegen seiner Duldsamkeit allgemein bekannt. Jeder, der etwas Ernsthaftes und Wesentliches in angemessener Form zu sagen hat, darf in Eden zu Worte kommen. Werner Zimmermann hatte schon vor dem Kongress wiederholt frei in Eden sprechen dürfen, und es wird ihm auch in Zukunft nicht verwehrt werden” von Christian Böttger | The congress took place from 9 to 15 July almost exclusively in Eden. Only on 14 and 15 July meetings were intended in Hamburg. If it went instrumentalisieren Ude in its lecture "Vegetarismus as schutzdamm against the breaking chaos" therefore, this against "the near-rolling storm tides of the social revolution to", then Zimmermann under the topic "Vegetarianism tried as world reform and the attitude of Japan, China, India and America to Vegetarianism" to arrange for the listeners its observations over vegetarian living non-European peoples. Werner Zimmermann called with this lecture and its occurrence - "near naked, brown-skinned, nature near, rather spielerisch as kaempferisch. . . without dogma, without prejudice"- not only "the Entzuecken of all freiheitsduerstenden young people" out, but also the African representative on the congress, Bascomba, expressed himself fascinated over Zimmermann: "today, when Werner Zimmermann spoke, I felt for the first time well in Europe.
