According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than one billion people in the world today live in poverty. These statistics are all the more striking in a world where more than one-third of all the grain produced is being fed to cattle and other livestock. In 1996, the theme "Hunger in a world of plenty" when UN representatives from around the world met to discuss ways to alleviate this pending global crisis . It has been concluded that the problem was not insufficient food production but inequitable distribution. "The result is that the food does not reach the needy." Author of the best-selling Diet for a New America, John Robbins writes: the world hunger problem is not only the responsibility of the United Nations, but of every human being on the planet. Overcome with insatiable greed, modern materialistic society blindly pillages the earth of valuable resources and denies billions their God-given quota of food. It appears, therefore, that the solution to the world hunger crisis goes beyond the bounds of economic maneuvering to the deeper issue of individuals and countries honestly acknowledging selfish gluttony. Established in 1972, Hare Krishna Food for Life has emerged as the world's largest vegetarian food relief program. "Our mission is to bring about a peaceful and prosperous world through the liberal distribution of sanctified vegetarian food," says Australian born Priyavrata das, the international director of the program. "Food for Life is attempting to address the world hunger problem directly at its root. " Everything is sufficient, provided that we know how to distribute it. However, the deplorable condition of today is that one man or country is taking more than they need while another is starving. In its efforts to solve world hunger, Hare Krishna Food for Life is training its members to be selfless, humble, compassionate, equipoised, and broad-minded enough to understand the needs and concerns of the world they live. Paul Turner is Director of Food for Life Global-the world's largest vegetarian/vegan food relief. Spiritual Name: Priyavrata Das (Priya-Beloved; Vrata-Vow, determined; Das--Servant of God.) Birth: November 4, 1963 in Sydney, Australia. Interests: Bhakti yoga, Singing, Web site development, Computer Graphic Design, Health, Vegetarianism, Cooking, and Numerology. Paul joined the Food for Life program in 1983 and in 1993 was elected as the global director. Priyavrata, also known as Priya in the Hare Krishna movement, has traveled to more than 50 countries, including war zones like Chechnya and Sarajevo, helping to establish Food for Life programs and train members. Paul is married to Rupal Mehta from India. He is a singer, songwriter, graphic designer, web site developer, lecturer and vegetarian chef. A note on this archive.
