In 2002 the first congress was held in Scotland, hosted by the [Vegetarian Society UK](http://www.vegsoc.org/) which was established in 1847 and boasts its own cookery school, [Cordon Vert](http://www.vegsoc.org/cordonvert/). We invited you to join us in a celebration and learning experience of a diet which can answer many of the problems of the planet and its people whether they are concerned with health, the environment or the way to harmony between all the species of the world. At every World Vegetarian Congress you are invited to join our vegetarian family for six days and not only will you enjoy the company of like minded individuals but you will learn all there is to know about our fascinating diet, explore new ideas, share views from different cultures and even have fun! **FORMAT OF THE WEEK** *(as planned for Edinburgh - similar for all Congresses)* Each day will start with some early morning exercise (optional!) and after a fortifying breakfast there will be a choice of sessions (workshops, cookery demonstrations or lectures/presentations) before lunch and the same in the afternoon. Morning and afternoon coffee breaks will give an opportunity to network with other participants and compare views and there will be a plenary session on subjects such as health, environment and ethics at around 4.30pm. This is scheduled to finish in good time for an early evening meal allowing you time to dance, sing, relax and be entertained each evening. On Wednesday the day will be free for full day excursions or just time to explore Edinburgh and on Friday after lunch there will be further free time for half day excursions. The week will end on a high on Saturday night with our gala dinner and ceilidh (Scottish dance) and Sunday morning will be time for sad good-byes or to join our optional post congress tour of Scotland. **FOOD FOR THE BODY, FOOD FOR THE MIND** All meals from Monday lunch to Sunday breakfast (excluding lunch on Wednesday due to excursions) are included in the full congress fee and all meals are vegan with raw food options. Morning and afternoon coffee breaks are also included in the price so delegates only need to bring themselves! The menus will be under the supervision and guidance of the Society’s Cordon Vert cookery school and staff from the School will be on site all week to give cookery demonstrations and ensure that all runs smoothly. The event will be non smoking throughout (but smoking is permitted in the extensive grounds), the university has a fitness centre, shops, banking and other facilities on site and a creche may be available if required at extra cost. Registration will take place on Monday morning until lunch and beyond if required, additional accommodation can be organised at Heriot Watt for Sunday night for anyone needing to travel earlier. We regret no pets are allowed and we are unable to give refunds for any missed meals or accommodation not used during the conference. We would advise all participants to ensure they have travel insurance which covers cancellation if needed. A note on this archive.
