Ohjects: To circulate useful information on all matters of health; to draw attention to healthful, cheap, and natural articles of diet to promote thrift in food, temperance in eating; the greatest use of grains, fruits, nuts, and other products of the vegetable kingdom; and to advocate the disuse of animal foods. The Society consists of (a) Members Those who abstain from flesh, fish, and fowl; (b) Associates: Those who approve and sympathize with the principles. SHORT SUMMARY OF WORK IN 1897. Lectures, meetings and debates have been held as usual throughout the county, including Combmartin, Braunton, North Tawton, Exeter, Torquay, Devonport, Salcombe, Teignrnouth. Food Sample and Refreshment Stalls were successfully carried out at four Exhibitions. Cooked specimens were furnished to a meeting in Cornwall. A second edition of the Society's Recipe Sheet has been issued. The Rules were also revised. A Lending Library has been formed for Members, and also books purchased and loaned to Branches for circulation. Ten thousand handbills were printed, and used as house-to-house distribution, with other literature. Members at Tiverton. Ilfracombe, The Three Towns and Salcombe have been added to the County Vegetarian Council, and friends in several towns have been visited and encouraged. The Annual Meeting was well attended and proved a great incentive to earnest work. A juvenile Branch of the Society has been formed at Exeter, and several meetings held. Monthly Committee and other Social Meetings have been well attended. The Members gladly assisted in making a special feature of the Cycle Contests at Exeter, at which members of the Vegetarian Cycle Club competed with marked success, and whose prowess was a powerful object lesson. For the help thus publicly rendered locally to the cause, the Committee are most grateful. The usual Autumn Lecture Mission could not be carried out, but arrangements are being completed for holding it in February and March. The outlook is encouraging, and, if funds permitted, the Committee could profitably employ an Organizing Secretary wholly for this County.
