HEALTHY LIVING SUPPER CLUB - History

[HomeRecipesDiary Of Events]

History of the HLSC

The HLSC was formed in April 1996 to promote a healthy and happy lifestyle. It launched a series of meetings with a vegetarian cookery demonstration, a guest speaker's talk on nutrition and more widely on health issues, plus eating and socializing!

Encouraged by its popularity, we continued to have a meeting once a month, at 6:30 pm on the first Wednesday of every month except August. So far we have organised Russian, Mediterranean, Japanese, Mexican, Venezuelan, American, English, Indian and Caribbean evenings. In celebration of our first anniversary, we had a series of meetings in May 1997 entitled NEW START. Each letter is the initial of one basic element of health:

Each evening had a practical session, such as fitness instruction for the evening focused on Exercise and hydrotherapy for the evening focused on Water. Everyone enjoyed these evenings!

Reports on other, more recent, events are also available.

Organisers of the HLSC

Healthy Living Supper Club is based on the health and philosophical aims of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, a Protestant Christian Church with a doctrine totally based on the Bible. A characteristic feature is that it has a strong emphasis on Health; there are Adventist hospitals all over the world. The Church has promoted vegetarianism since its formation in the USA in 1860. NEW START is its program for a healthy, happy life style. Healthy Living Supper Club started as a joint venture of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and members of Oxford Vegetarians, and this collaboration continued for four years. From the health point of view and these historical reasons we encourage veganism wherever possible.
