By 1914 there was a Vegetarian
Society in almost every country of Europe and many more around the world.
They had built a strong international network of friendship - and peace.
The 1916 Congress would have been in Paris, France.
By 1916 Conscientious Objectors, including thousands of vegetarians in
Europe, were imprisoned or executed for refusing to fight each other.
Within a few years of the 1917 revolution vegetarianism was declared illegal
in Soviet Russia, dozens of vegetarian societies and restaurants were
closed. |

In 1935
the Deutscher Vegetarier-Bund was forced to either join the Nazi
Living Reform Movement or close. They voted to close. In 1945 they re-formed
but by that time the Soviet occupation of most of Eastern Europe had forced
all the vegetarian societies and restaurants in those countries to close. |
