Le Bermuda hanno un governo autonomo, ed allo stesso tempo sono una colonia britannica. La densità di popolazione è molto elevata, ma nelle isole ci sono tanti spazi aperti. Le case punteggiano qua e là la flora abbondante e l'alta densità di popolazione è visibile solamente dall'alto, in volo, quando i tetti bianchi e splendenti si pongono in assoluto contrasto con la vegetazione perenne. Nelle isole non c'è alcuna sorgente naturale d'acqua, perciò esse dipendono dalla pioggia trattenuta dai tetti -costruiti e trattati in modo speciale- e quindi incanalata in serbatoi sotterranei.

Il sessanta per cento dei 60,000 abitanti è d'origine africana, la maggioranza dei quali è giunta seguendo la via delle Indie Occidentali. La restante parte della popolazione viene dall'Europa, dagli Stati Uniti d'America e dalle Azzorre. La lingua principale è l'Inglese, mentre una piccola minoranza parla il Portoghese. Turismo e assicurazione/riassicurazione incidono per buona parte delle entrate, e le diverse migliaia di lavoratori stranieri provenienti da tutto il mondo conferiscono alle isole un sapore cosmopolita. Il costo della vita è elevato, ma lo è altrettanto lo standard di vita, e la maggioranza dei Bermudiani dispone di entrate sufficienti per viaggi e piaceri materiali.

 Non si ha memoria di quanto tempo fa sia iniziata la pratica del vegetarianismo nelle Bermuda, né esiste alcuna statistica sul numero dei vegetariani sull'isola. Poiché gli aderenti alla fede degli Avventisti del Settimo Giorno arrivarono qui alla fine a 1800, si può assumere che una minoranza della popolazione abbia scelto già allora di astenersi dal consumare carne. A quel tempo, come in molti altri paesi, una grande percentuale della popolazione viveva fuori dell'isola e, a causa delle condizioni economiche, mangiava carne raramente o mai. Vista la prossimità con gli Stati Uniti, i gusti e le attività nordamericane, adattati al modo di vivere del luogo, tendono ad essere rapidamente adottati.

 Ai Bermudiani piace mangiare, organizzare picnic e pasti con cibi portati dai partecipanti, cene in chiesa e feste di famiglia per celebrare le piccole occasioni. La tradizionale alimentazione con pollo fritto, piselli e riso (con chourico, una grassa salsa speziata portoghese), coleslaw (insalata di cavolo tritato con carote, cipolle e maionese), macaroni cheese (pasticcio di maccheroni), insalata di patate e farina o cassava pie (fatta con farina di manioca, molte uova, burro e carne) ha creato una popolazione poco sana, con un'incidenza estremamente alta di diabete, ed il tasso tipico americano per le altre più importanti malattie. Nonostante questo, come in tanti paesi, la maggioranza delle persone non desidera abbandonare gli schemi alimentari familiari. C'è però un segmento crescente della popolazione che sta rendendosi conto di dover cambiare la propria alimentazione. Diventa così più facile trovare portate vegetariane nei menu dei ristoranti. Inoltre, i ristoranti economici Bermudiani sono di uno standard talmente elevato che, anche se piatti senza carne o latticini non sono previsti sul menu, lo chef creerà piatti vegetariani o vegani su semplice ordinazione.

 Siccome tutta la carne consumata nelle Bermuda è importata, coscienza e conoscenza dei macelli e degli allevamenti in batteria sono molto ridotte rispetto ai paesi da dove tali prodotti provengono. Qui è la salute, più della protezione degli animali, la ragione principale per diventare vegetariani, anche se in tempi recenti sono sorte alcune preoccupazioni per l'ambiente. Neanche l'economia rappresenta una ragione importante, perché i Bermudiani sono abituati a spendere molto denaro per il cibo.

 In vari momenti dell'ultimo decennio, alcuni gruppi hanno allestito ristoranti vegetariani che, per una ragione o per un'altra, hanno successivamente chiuso. Circa un anno fa è stato aperto un ristorante di cibi naturali chiamato *Stagioni nel Sole.* Sebbene anch'esso abbia avuto dei problemi, i proprietari credono che il cibo vegetariano debba essere disponibile anche se non dovesse produrre alcun profitto per anni. Un paio di ristoranti economici preparano ora pranzi vegetariani e sono entrati nell'arena molto competitiva dei 'fast food' di qualità: niente è 'fast' nelle Bermuda, e in giro c'è un distinto senso di *mañana*, ma tutto è relativo...

 Ottenere gli ingredienti per cucinare non è un problema. Ci sono tre grandi negozi dedicati alla vendita di cibi naturali; alcuni grandi supermercati hanno voluto raccogliere parte del successo, ed ora espongono vari elementi vegetariani essenziali. Mantenere un rifornimento consistente di vegetali e frutta biologica di qualità è comunque ancora difficoltoso. Due supermarket tentano di fornire prodotti biologici che spesso, dopo il viaggio extra attraverso l'Atlantico, non hanno più l'apparenza tanto fresca ed il venditore si rifiuta di esporli ed anche se li dispone sulle mensole, il consumatore non ancora convinto del valore e del beneficio del cibo biologico scarta lo spinacio biologico avvizzito a favore della varietà più croccante cresciuta localmente in un suolo povero di nutrienti.

 La Società Vegetariana locale esiste da tre anni. Organizziamo cene potluck (sulla base di cibi portati da ciascuno), siamo attivi alle fiere sulla salute che diffondono informazioni al pubblico, produciamo una newsletter mensile (che viene inviata a 200 persone) e sponsorizziamo ogni anno un evento di una giornata dedicato alla salute ed al benessere, che attrae circa 500 persone. C'è una piccola libreria che permette il prestito di libri ai membri della società e consigliamo regolarmente ai visitatori vegetariani dell'isola dove possono mangiare. Come molte associazioni, potremmo essere più attivi con la forza di un maggior numero di volontari. In ogni modo, siamo un'organizzazione ancora giovane, e confidiamo che, tenendo vivo lo spirito dei membri fondatori, il nostro numero e le nostre attività cresceranno gradualmente con il tempo.
