| Reformadora Social Quando reconhecemos a unidade de todas as cosas vivas, nesse momento surge a pergunta - como podemos manter nossa vida com o menor dano possível às vidas ao nosso redor; como podemos prevenir que nossa própria vida adicione sofrimento ao mundo em que vivemos?  Encontramos entre os animais, como entre os homens, a capacidade de sentir prazer e a capacidade de sentir dor; os vemos mover-se por amor e ódio; os vemos sentindo terror e atração; reconhecemos neles capacidade de sensações muito similares às nossas, e apesar de os superarmos imensamente em intelecto, em meras características passionais, nossa natureza e a dos animais estão muito ligadas. Sabemos que quando eles sentem terror, esse terror significa sofrimento. Sabemos que quando são ferimos, isso significa dor para eles. Sabemos que as ameaças lhes causam sofrimento; eles se encolhem, sentem medo, sentem a ausência de relações amistosas e de imediato começamos a ver que em nossas relações com o reino animal surge um dever que todas as mentes pensantes e compassivas deveriam reconhecer - o dever de que como somos mais fortes em mente que os animais, devemos ou deveríamos ser seus guardiões ou ajudar-lhes, e não seus tiranos e opressores, e não temos o direito de causar-lhes sofrimento e terror só para a gratificação do paladar, só por um luxo a mais em nossa vida.  ...há outro pensamento ligado a este: o que acontece com nossos deveres para com nossos semelhantes - os homens? E aqui apelo particularmente a meu sexo, porque se supõe que as mulheres são o modelo na sociedade do refinamento, da gentileza, da compaixão, da ternura e da pureza. Porém ninguém pode comer a carne de um animal massacrado sem ter usado a mão de um homem como assassino. Supondo que tivéssemos que matar nós mesmas às criaturas que colocamos em nossa mesa, será que há uma mulher entre cem que iria ao matadouro para sacrificar uma vaca, um bezerro, um novilho, uma ovelha ou um porco?... Mas se não pudemos fazer isto, nem presenciar, se somos tão refinadas que não podemos permitir contato próximo entre nós e os magarefes que fornecem esta comida, se sentimos que estão tão embrutecidos por seu comércio que seus meros corpos são repulsivos devido ao contato constante de sangue com o qual devem estar continuamente manchados, se reconhecemos a brutalidade física que resulta inevitavelmente de tal contato, como nos atrevemos a chamar-nos a nós mesmas de refinadas se compramos nosso refinamento com a brutalidade de outros e exigimos que alguns devem ser brutos para que nós possamos comer o resultado de sua brutalidade?
