The new form of this fatal disease was discovered last year. Scientists presume that the consumption of BSE-contaminated beef is the cause of this disease. The identified cases of the new CJD variant have been confirmed according to the Ministry of Health by pathologists and it would be possible only in rare cases to give a definite diagnosis of living people. Diese Aussage stammt von dem Theologen Luigi Lorenzetti in einem Antwortschreiben auf einen Leserbrief, in dem der Leser ein Kirchenfest beschreibt, bei dem ein großes Kalb gebraten wurde. "Die Wahrheit der Schöpfung" so der Theologe, "fordert uns auf, nicht nur Menschen, sondern auch Tiere, Pflanzen und alle anderen Geschöpfe in Ehrfurcht zu betrachten. Vor dem Zweck, den sie für den Menschen erfüllen, stellt jedes Geschöpf Gottes einen eigenen Wert dar." Er betont die Bedeutung davon, daß Katholiken "eine neue kulturelle Empfindsamkeit gegenüber Tier und Umwelt entwickeln." Auch wenn in diesem Artikel der Verzehr von Fleisch nicht verurteilt wird, geht Lorenzetti detailliert auf den "Wert der vegetarischen Bewegung und des Ziels, keine Tiere mehr zu töten" ein. "Es geht hier nicht darum, sich zu einer abstrusen Verehrung der Tiere zu bekennen, wie es in manchen Sekten üblich ist, in denen die vegetarische Lebensweise auf eine instinktive Ablehunung jedes tierischen Produkts als "unrein" zurückgeht, sondern es geht hier um das Leben des Tieres." "Das Leben zu achten bedeutet gleichzeitig, die Schönheit und die Unverletzlichkeit unseres Lebens als auch des Lebens anderer zu achten und unser Bestes zu tun, um die bestmögliche Entwicklung des Lebens zu fördern." Im Augenblick steht das Ziel, daß wir alle Vegetarier werden, noch in weiter Ferne: "Der Übergang zu einer sogenannten zivilisierteren Ernährung steht nicht kurz bevor, doch irgendwann werden wir dieses Ziel erreichen." Die vegetarische Lebensweise kann uns helfen, Gott näherzukommen. This is the result of research on a hundred healthy middle-aged women in Finland. The women had not practised any sport before. One half of them continued doing so, the other half started with a program of one hour three times a week. The exercises contained even intensive ‘High-Impact-Training’ with jumps and step-exercises. The bone density increased especially in those places which supported most of the body weight. It is very important especially for women to build up and conserve enough bone mass before the beginning of the menopause. The changing of hormones during the menopause means the bones weaken gradually. Many broken bones in older women are a serious and costly problem which gets worse with a sedentary lifestyle. Regular training (and a lot of fresh food! – The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition wrote in 1983 that researchers found in the largest study ever made on osteoporosis that 65 year old vegetarian women had an 18% loss of body mass against the 35% of non-vegetarians. The equivalent figures for men: 3% and 7%.
