#  2nd West Africa Vegetarian Congress, Accra 2009: Report / Compte rendu

![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/africa.jpg)| **IVU in Africa**  2nd WEST AFRICA VEGETARIAN CONGRESS   October 29 - November 2, 2009     **Friday 30 October 2009**    Approximately 75 of us met at about 7.30 am in a square in the centre of Accra, the capital of Ghana. Everyone was wearing a Vegetarian Association of Ghana T-shirt – Ghanaian, Nigerians, Ethiopians, Cameroonians etc. Togo put up a good show with a delegation of nine students, all vegan, representing the brand new and very enthusiastic Brittish School in Lomé Association of Vegan and Vegetarian Students (AEV-Togo), which already has about forty members. They had come with a lecturer from the University of Lomé, Prof. Ameyo.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana3b200.jpg)  We marched for about an hour through the city centre to the Health Ministry. A car with loudspeakers led the demonstration. On the way some demonstrators distributed leaflets explaining what vegetarianism is, and there were banners with pro-veg slogans.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/visitors_038200.jpg)  On arrival at the Health Ministry it was interesting to see a board measuring at least 12 square metres on the building with the slogan *eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat*, which proves from the outset that the Ghanaian Ministry of Health is aware of vegetarianism.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/visitors_029200.jpg)   We stayed in front of the Ministry for about 45 minutes. Unfortunately the Minister had already left but our presence was noticed by the government. Then we went to eat at ASSASEPA (http://www.ivu.org/africa/ghana-vag/index.html), one of the five or six vegetarian restaurants in Accra, where the atmosphere was very convivial.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana7b200.jpg)   In the afternoon we went to an orphanage in Accra to distribute approximately 1 cubic metre of plant food for the children. We got a warm reception from the lady in charge, who greatly appreciated this gesture from the vegetarian movement.  | **vendredi 30 octobre 2009**    Nous sommes retrouvés vers 7h30, environ 75 personnes sur une place au centre ville d’Accra, capitale du Ghana. Tout le monde portait un T shirt «Vegetarian Association of Ghana», Ghanéens, Nigériens, Ethiopiens, Camerounais … Notons que le Togo a fait une apparition remarquable avec une délégation de neuf étudiants, tous vegan, représentant la toute jeune association des étudiants végétaliens et végétariens de l’Université de Lomé (AEV-Togo), très enthousiaste, qui compte déjà une quarantaine de membres. Ils étaient venus avec un professeur de l’université de Lomé, Ameyo.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/visitors_035200.jpg)  Nous avons marché environ une heure en centre ville jusqu’au Ministère de la Santé. Une voiture avec des hauts parleurs était en tête de la manifestation. Sur le parcours, certains manifestants ont distribué des tracts expliquant les enjeux du végétarisme, et il y avait des banderoles avec des slogans pro veg.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/visitors_028200.jpg)  Arrivés au Ministère de la Santé, il était intéressant de remarquer un panneau d'au moins 12m² sur le bâtiment, avec un slogan: *Manger plus de fruits et légumes et moins de viande*, ce qui prouve d’entrée que le Ministère du Ghana est sensible au sujet du végétarisme.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana7a200.jpg)   Nous sommes restés environ 45 minutes devant le Ministère. Le ministre n’était malheureusement plus là, mais notre présence a été remarquée par l’administration. Ensuite, nous sommes allés manger à ASSASEPA (http://www.ivu.org/africa/ghana-vag/index.html), un des cinq ou six restaurants végétariens d’Accra; l’ambiance y était très conviviale.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana8b200.jpg)   L’après midi, nous sommes allés jusqu’à un orphelinat d’Accra distribuer environ 1m3 de nourriture végétale pour les enfants. Nous avons été très bien reçus par la responsable, qui a grandement apprécié ce geste du mouvement végétarien.  **Saturday 31 October 2009**    Place: the large Kwame Nkruma memorial park    Between 8 and 10 am we set up tarpaulins and chairs for the conference. This large green space right in the city centre is really the ideal place for a veggie and eco conference.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana2a200.jpg)   The talks started at about 10.30 in front of some 250 to 300 people. 50 yards away from the speakers, in the same park, around twenty stalls had been set up by producers of veggie food, owners of veggie restaurants, practitioners of traditional African herbal medicine and Esperantists. The stalls had a very rich and varied selection of veggie food including gastronomic discoveries and new flavours that proved how dynamic Ghana is in seeking out new tastes.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana5a200.jpg)   People kept arriving, and we can reasonably estimate that 500 people visited the stalls and listened to at least some of the talks. For four to five hours ten or so speakers explained the advantages of and the necessity for vegetarianism in today's world. Speakers included:  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana6a200.jpg)  \- the former chairman of Ghana's supreme court: 81 years old, vegetarian for 50 years, he spoke about his very good health and urged everyone to become vegetarian. A devotee of peace, he quoted Gandhi, one of the greatest vegetarians of the 20th century.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana10a200.jpg)  \- Emmanuel Eyo, Nigeria, IVU regional coordinator for Africa  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana10b200.jpg)  \- Dr Anteneh Roba, chairman of *www.ifundafrica.org*, an Ethiopian who lives in the USA and had come over specially for the conference. His talk dealt mainly with the current situation in Africa and in the world. He spoke about:   \- the health challenges, (cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, obesity)   \- the environmental challenges, mentioning the latest findings and explaining that since 21 October 2009 the WORLD WATCH INSTITUTE, the world-famous association of American researchers, has calculated that animal farming is responsible for 51% of greenhouse gas emissions, (<http://www.worldwatch.org/node/6294n> line 13), not only 18% as the FAO used to think. Dr Anteneh explained that it will be Africa that will be the first to suffer the effects of climate change and that 250 million Africans will be affected in the next few years.   \- Fishing is 250% above the level that the seas can sustain.    Dr Anteneh distributed hundreds of colour leaflets with a very good summary of what the current food choices of each of us really mean.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana12200.jpg)   Dr Dave Way, a Canadian who has a doctorate in biology and teaches mathematics at the University of Lomé, also gave a convincing demonstration and explained that today ecology cannot exist in isolation, i.e. without vegetarianism.    There are now six billion humans on the planet and that figure will soon reach nine billion.   Dave reminded us that the Earth's resources are LIMITED and that we must get into the habit of consuming less, especially ceasing animal farming, which wastes agricultural land, water and energy, and of reducing consumption in general.   Like Dr Anteneh, Dr Way reminded us that vegetarianism cannot be left out of the equation when climate change is being tackled.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana1a200.jpg)   When the talks finished at around 3.30 pm a variety of veggie food was given out free to everyone there, and there was a very good atmosphere.    I left Accra at noon on the Sunday.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana3a200.jpg)  **Conclusion:**    This 2nd African vegetarian conference was extremely well organized by our Ghanaian friend Korblah Wisdom, who ensured that all those taking part felt at home. He organized all the invitations, logistics, accommodation and transport.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana4b200.jpg)   I am familiar with costs in West Africa, and I think that with the £1600 sent from Europe by the IVU it would have been difficult to put on a bigger event.    75 people at the demonstration and 500 people attending all or some of the talks is not a lot but it is encouraging because this conference showed that there is a real vegetarian movement in Africa and that influential people are willing to take part.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana9b200.jpg)   This may have been the first public vegetarian demonstration in Africa but it's a start, and there may well be 5,000 people at the next conference.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/Photo_029200.jpg)   The atmosphere was very friendly and the Ghanaians were open-minded about vegetarianism. This meeting enabled us vegetarians in Africa to get to know one another, to exchange ideas, e-mail addresses etc. The traditional themes of respect for the lives of animals, health and good veggie food were tackled and explained well.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/Photo_055200.jpg)   I think that the main new theme dealt with was *vegetarianism as a way of tackling climate change*, which is a huge challenge in the 21st century. Ce grand espace vert en plein centre ville est vraiment l’endroit idéal pour un congrès veg et écolo.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana2b200.jpg)   La conférence a commencé vers 10h30 devant 250 à 300 personnes. A 50 mètres de la conférence, dans le même jardin public, une vingtaine de stands étaient installés. Ils étaient tenus par des producteurs de nourriture veg et des tenanciers de restaurants veg, et il y avais aussi des stands de médicine africaine à base de plante et de la langue esperanto. Les stands étaient très bien approvisionnés en nourriture veg très riche et variée, incluant des découvertes gastronomiques et de nouvelles saveurs qui ont prouvé le dynamisme du Ghana dans la recherche de nouveaux goûts alimentaires.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana5b200.jpg)   Les gens arrivaient au fur et à mesure, et nous pouvons estimer raisonnablement que 500 personnes ont découvert les stands et ont écouté au moins une partie de la conférence. Pendant quatre à cinq heures une dizaine d’intervenants ont expliqué les avantages et la nécessité du végétarisme dans le monde d’aujourd’hui. Par exemple, je peux citer:  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana6b200.jpg)  \- l’ancien président de la cour suprême du Ghana: âgé de 81 ans, végétarien depuis 50 ans, il a parlé de sa très bonne santé et encouragé toute le monde au végétarisme. Épris de paix, il a cité Gandhi, l’un des plus grand végétariens du XXe siècle.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana8a200.jpg)  \- Emmanuel Eyo, Nigéria, IVU regional coordinator for Africa  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana11200.jpg)  \- Dr Anteneh Roba président de www.ifundafrica.org, un éthiopien qui vit aux USA, spécialement venu des USA pour le congrès. Son intervention était particulièrement adaptée aux réalités de l’Afrique et du monde. Il a parlé des:   \- enjeux pour la santé, (cancer, maladies cardiaques, diabètes, hypertension, obésité)   \- enjeux environnementaux avec des éléments très recents, expliquant que le groupement de chercheurs américains WORLD WATCH INSTITUTE, mondialement réputé, a calculé depuis le 21 octobre 2009 que l’élevage est responsable de 51% des émissions de gaz à effet de serre, (<http://www.worldwatch.org/node/6294n>, line 13) et pas seulement de 18% comme la FAO le pensait avant. Dr Anteneh a expliqué que c’est l’Afrique qui va souffrir en priorité du changement climatique et que 250 millions d’africains seraient touchés dans les prochaines années.   \- La pêche est 250% au-delà des ressources marines.    Dr Anteneh a distribué des centaines de tracts en couleur résumant très bien les enjeux actuels des choix alimentaires de chacun d'entre nous.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana13200.jpg)   Dr Dave Way, Canadien, docteur en biologie qui enseigne les mathématiques à l’université de Lomé, a aussi fait une démonstration convaincante et a expliqué qu’aujourd’hui l’écologie ne peut se passer du végétarisme. Nous sommes aujourd’hui 6 milliards d’être humains, bientôt 9 milliards.   Dave a rappelé que les ressources de la Terre sont LIMITÉES et que nous devons prendre des habitudes de moindre consommation, spécialement en arrêtant l’élevage, source de gaspillage des ressources en superficie agricole, en eau et en énergie, et plus largement en réduisant la consommation, de manière générale.   Tout comme le Dr Anteneh, le Dr Way a rappelé que le végétarisme est un moyen d’action incontournable face aux enjeux du changement climatique.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana1b200.jpg)   A la fin de la conférence, vers 15h30, des plats de nourriture veg variée ont été distribués gratuitement à toute personne présente, dans une très bonne ambiance.    J'ai quitté Accra le dimanche midi.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana4a200.jpg)  **Conclusion**     Ce 2e congès africain du végétarisme a été parfaitement bien organisé par notre ami ghanéen Korblah Wisdom, qui était à l’écoute de tout le monde pour que tous les participants soient à l’aise. Il s’est très bien occupé de toutes les invitations, la logistique, les logements et les transports.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/ghana9a200.jpg)   Je connais les coûts logistiques en Afrique de l’Ouest, et je pense qu’avec les 1600 livres sterling envoyées de l'Europe par IVU il aurait été difficile de faire plus grand. 75 personnes à la manifestation, et 500 personnes qui ont suivi tout ou une partie de la conférence, c’est encore peu, mais c’est encourageant car ce congrès a montré l’existence d’un vrai courant africain végétarien, avec des intervenants de poids à la conférence.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/Photo_028200.jpg)   Car c’est peut être la première manifestation végétarienne en Afrique sur la voie publique. Il faut bien un début; 5 000 personnes au prochain congrès?  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/Photo_031200.jpg)   L’ambiance y était très conviviale et les Ghanéens étaient ouverts d’esprit sur le sujet du végétarisme. Cette rencontre nous a permis de faire connaissance, végétariens de l’Afrique, d’échanger des idées, des e-mails …    Les sujets traditionnels classiques du respect de la vie animale, de la santé et de la gastromie veg ont été abordés et bien expliqués.  ![](https://ivu.org/images/legacy/history/africa/ghana-pics/Photo_060200.jpg)   Je pense que le nouveau thème majeur abordé est *le végétarisme comme moyen de lutte contre le changement climatique*, un défi majeur du XXIe siècle.
