#  Vegetarian News - AUSTRALASISCHER REGIONALER BERICHT

Doch vielleicht möchte der Leser gern etwas über die allgemeine Haltung der australischen Öffentlichkeit gegenüber dem Vegetarismus wissen. Als Australien im 18. Jahrhundert von weißen Menschen besiedelt wurde, war leider die Einfuhr von europäischen Tieren für Nahrungszwecke eine ihrer ersten Handlungen. Diese Tiere, hauptsächlich Rinder und Schafe, sind für die australischen Verhältnisse völlig ungeeignet, und die Umwelt wird von ihnen ernstlich geschädigt. Sogar heutzutage, etwa zweihundert Jahre später, setzt sich dieser Vorgang fort. Die 26 Millionen Rinder und 120 Millionen Schafe in Australien bedeuten eine riesige Last für die Umwelt des Landes. Außerdem übertreffen sie die Menschen zahlenmäßig mit 16:1, verglichen mit 5:1 in den meisten anderen Ländern.   Der "durchschnittliche" Australier, falls es in der Tat solch eine "durchschnittliche" Person gibt, neigt dazu, den vegetarischen Lebensstil als ein wenig mystisch zu betrachten. Sie halten es für außergewöhnlich, dass jemand einen Tag ohne Fleisch überleben könnte und was den Veganismus betrifft - das ist etwas, das ihr Begriffsvermögen völlig übersteigt. Paradoxerweise wird es dennoch immer einfacher vegetarisches Essen in den Restaurants zu bekommen. Während es in kleinen ländlichen Orten ein kleines Problem sein kann, ist es in den Großstädten ungewöhnlich, wenn man kein anständiges vegetarisches Essen bekommt. Und dafür müssen wir der vergangenen Einwanderungspolitik Australiens danken.   Tausende von Umherziehenden aus europäischen Ländern kamen nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg nach Australien, und viele von ihnen kamen aus Italien und brachten ihre Mittelmeer-Kochkunst mit Teigwaren, Oliven-Öl, Knoblauch und Tomaten mit. Sogar in Fast-Food-Verkaufsstellen, welche dazu neigen, sich stark auf Fleisch und Fisch zu konzentrieren, ist es normalerweise möglich, eine Portion Nudeln und Salat zu erhalten. Jede Welle von Einwanderern bringt ihre Nahrungsvorlieben mit sich. Das Ergebnis ist daher, dass wir Verkaufsstellen für chinesisches, indisches, italienisches, griechisches, malaysisches, türkisches und libanesisches Essen haben. Sie sind jedoch nicht alle völlig vegetarisch, aber es ist im allgemeinen möglich, etwas Schmackhaftes und "Sicheres" zum Essen zu finden.   Vegetarische und vegane Gesellschaften gibt es in den meisten Haupstädten von Australien und Neuseeland. Es gibt seit 1948 eine formale Bewegung in Australien, und die Bewegung in Neuseeland ist sogar älter. Einige dieser Gesellschaften sind besonders aktiv mit regelmäßigen Veranstaltungen, während andere dazu neigen, sich auf die Bereitstellung eines Informationsdienstes zu konzentrieren. Und was für Fragen wir gestellt bekommen! Wo kann ich Asafoetida kaufen? Welche Käsesorten enthalten genmanipuliertes Lab? Wo kann ich eine qualfreie Mausefalle kaufen? Ist Fisch vegan?   Es ist jedoch eine sehr mühsame Arbeit. Mit nur wenigen Arbeitern und geringen Mitteln können wir nicht erhoffen, den Millionen Dollar kostenden Mitteilungen, die von der Fleisch- und Molkerei-Lobby kommen, entgegenzuwirken. Die Giganten mit ungesundem Essen schleichen sich überall in das Leben der Leute ein. Dies schließt die Unterstützung von Schulkindern und das Erwerben von Ausbildungsauthoritäten für die Anerkennung des Servierens an Burger-Verkaufsstellen als legitimes Schulprojekt ein. Lachen sie nicht - das ist vorgekommen! Verschiedene australische Staaten gaben vor kurzem ihre Zustimmung. Und Molkerei-Betriebe schiffen riesige Mengen australischer Milch nach China, damit die Chinesen eine "bessere" Nahrung und zusätzliches Kalzium erhalten. Wo wird das enden?   Das Internationale Vegan Festival fand in Perth, Australien, kurz vor dem Welt-Vegetarier-Kongress statt. Ich weiß nicht, ob jemand die Energie hatte, beide Veranstaltung in ihrer Gesamtheit zu besuchen (Alex Bourke war bei beiden anwesend), nach dem, was man hört, war die Veranstaltung ein langes Fest des Kochens, Essens, Unterhaltens und Lernens. In einem weitläufigen alten Gästehaus stattfindend reichten die Veranstaltungen von der Erzeugung und Durchführung eines Spiels bis zu der Diskussion über das Geistliche bei einer Rohkost-Ernährung.   Ach ja - haben Sie das über den Neuseeländer, der vorhat, um das Land zu laufen, gehört? Er schlägt vor, täglich 50 km zurückzulegen, wobei er 6 Tage pro Woche laufen wird, und hofft sein Heldenstück, in vier Monaten vollendet zu haben. Don Wood, der seit 20 Jahren Vegetarier ist, hofft, den Mythos, dass rotes Fleisch Energie bedeutet, zu widerlegen und die Wichtigkeit der körperlichen Fitness hervorzuheben. Er wird voraussichtlich am 31. Dezember 1999 um Mitternacht starten.   "New Vegetarian and Natural Health" (Neue vegetarische und natürliche Gesundheit), eine landesweite Veröffentlichung, erzielt weiterhin einen Erfolg nach dem anderen. Mit einer Auflagenstärke von ungefähr 13000 findet es seinen Weg nicht nur zu Mitgliedern von vegetarischen Gesellschaften, sondern auch in lokale Bibliotheken, und man kann es sogar im Supermarkt an den Kassen und in Zeitungsläden finden.
