Wenn ja, hilft uns diese Idee vielleicht zu verstehen, warum die globale Umwelt und die globale Wirtschaft beide in solch beklagenswertem Zustand sind. Tatsächlich, wenn das eine in einem schlechten Zustand ist, muss das andere auch in einem schlechten Zustand sein, da eigentlich nichts außer unsere natürlichen Rohstoffe in lausiger Verfassung sind. **Natürliche Rohstoffe sind einfach da** Wenn der Ökologe unsere natürlichen Rohstoffe betrachtet, tut er dies im Sinne von Energie, von Kalorien. Wenn der Ökonomist unsere natürlichen Rohstoffe betrachtet, benützt er als Maßstab einen Geldwert wie den Dollar oder Euro. Wir können unsere natürlichen Rohstoffe aus einer ökologischen, ökonomischen, oder sogar, warum nicht, einer spirituellen Sicht betrachten. Was sich ändert ist die Art, wie wir sie betrachten. Was sich nicht ändert ist, dass die natürlichen Rohstoffe einfach da sind, dass sie aus Energie und aus Materie, die lebt und stirbt, aus Materie, die fühlt und denkt, geschaffen sind. Und diese natürlichen Rohstoffe werden immer da sein, ganz egal, wie wir sie betrachten, es sei denn, Materie und Energie werden eines Tages für nichts und niemanden mehr Rohstoffe sein. Dies wird passieren, wenn das Leben und der Bedarf an Rohstoffen für das Leben von diesem Planeten verschwunden sind. **Wir sind das Nahrungsproblem** Materie und Energie sind einfach da. Unabhängig davon, wie wir sie bewerten, sie können nicht das Problem sein. Tatsächlich ist die Art, wie wir sie bewerten, das Problem, wir sind sozusagen das Problem. Lassen Sie es nicht gelten, wenn jemand versucht, Ihnen zu sagen, dass wir ein Umweltproblem haben, dass wir ein Nahrungsproblem haben, sei es regional, national oder global. Sagen Sie ihr oder ihm, dass wir keine Probleme haben, sondern, dass wir das Umweltproblem sind, dass wir das Nahrungsproblem sind. **Die Einheit von Ökologie und Ökonomie** So lange wir zum Beispiel glauben, dass eine gedeihende Wirtschaft gezwungenermaßen mit einer degradierenden Umwelt einhergeht, oder, dass zuviel Umweltschutz einen negativen Einfluss auf unsere wirtschaftliche Entwicklung haben wird, so lange wir so denken, stellen wir uns den ökologischen Zustand der Welt und den wirtschaftlichen Zustand der Welt als zwei verschiedene Sachen vor, wenn sie es eigentlich gar nicht sind. Wenn wir darüber reden, die Umwelt und die Wirtschaft wieder zusammenzubringen, läßt uns unser Wunschdenken vergessen, dass die zwei nur in unserem Denken getrennt waren. Indem wir Ökologie und Ökonomie in unserem Denken voneinander trennen, distanzieren wir uns selber von unseren natürlichen Rohstoffen, welche nach allem unsere natürliche Umwelt darstellen, diese ist gleichzeitig und im weitesten Sinn unsere natürliche Nahrung. Somit ist die globale Umweltkrise auch die globale Nahrungskrise. Unsere globale Nahrungskrise ist auch unsere globale Umweltkrise und weder Ökologen noch Ökonomisten werden diese Krise jemals lösen, bis wir uns wenigstens als integrierten Teil unserer natürlichen Rohstoffe sehen. **Wir sind Nahrung, wir sind Umwelt. Sind wir Mitgefühl?** Wenn wir essen, essen wir Umwelt. Wenn wir verdauen, werden wir, was wir essen, wir werden Umwelt. Wenn wir ausscheiden, scheiden wir Umwelt in die Umwelt aus. Wenn wir -wie man sagt- sind, was wir essen, sind wir Umwelt. Wenn wir dieses erstmal eingesehen haben, wird unser Geist ein natürlicher Rohstoff werden, der -endlich- nicht mehr unterscheidet zwischen Nahrung und Umwelt, ein Geist, der versucht der Umwelt, der Nahrung und zu guter Letzt sich selbst so wenig Schaden wie möglich zu tun. Solch ein Geist kann uns nicht zu dem gewaltfreien (im wirtschaftlichen Sinn), konservativen Weg des Lebens und Essens zurückführen. Dies ist der "königliche" Ausweg, oder, besser gesagt, dies ist der vegane Ausweg aus unserer globalen Nahrungs- und Umweltkrise. Es ist der vegane Ausweg aus dieser Verschwendung von Kalorien und Dollar, zu bis jetzt unbekannten Horizonten, wo die Konzepte hinter einem Mitgefühl für das Leben verschwinden, welches, nachdem es nur eine wunderschöne Vision war, endlich eine gelebte Gegenwart wird.
