Die beiden waren aufgrund einer Anzeige wegen Verleumdung durch Mc-Donalds-Firmenangehörige festgenommen worden, weil die beiden Flugblätter an Besucher von McDonalds Schnellimbissen verteilt hatten. Helen Steel und Dave Morris, die zwei Festgenommenen, sind arbeitslos und mittellos, sodaß sie keine Strafe bezahlen könnten, derer sie für schuldig befunden würden. Die meisten Personen, die von einer Verurteilung bedroht sind, müssen die Sache zurücknehmen, da sie unfähig sind, das Risiko der Bazahlung größerer Geldbeträge für Gerichtskosten und der Bezahlung einer Entschädigung auf sich zu nehmen, falls ein Fall von McDonalds gewonnen würde. Selbstverständlich hat McDonalds als mächtige internationale Organisation die finanziellen Möblichkeiten, jedes Gerichtsverfahren voll durchzuziehen. Die Verhandlung begann im Juni 1994, es wird erwartet, daß sie bis zum Herbst 1996 dauern wird. Im Dezember 1995 begann der längste bürgerliche Fall in der Geschichte der britischen Gerichtsbarkeit. Es liegt auf der Hand, daß McDonalds versucht hat, die Verhandlung infolge der Negativ-Werbung zu unterbrechen. Zusätzliches Problem: Die zwei Angeklagten haben Material, das McDonalds Bild in der Öffentlichkeit schaden könnte. Insgesamt 180 britische und internationale Zeugen (einschliesslich Dr. Neal Barnard und Howard Lyman, der gegenwärtig aufgerufen ist), sind als Zeugen zu den Machenschaften von Mc Donalds gegen die Umwelt, Millionen von Nutztieren, menschlicher Gesundheit, die Dritte Welt und auf McDonalds eigener Seite aufgerufen worden. Mc Donalds ist so besorgt um die Art und Weise, die der Fall für sie und die Negativ-Propaganda geht, daß sie zweimal Mitglieder des Verwaltungsrates der Firma aus den USA nach London eingeflogen haben, um mit den Angeklagte einen Vergleichsweg anzustreben. Die Sache ist lange noch nicht aus der Welt, wenn der Fall beendet sein wird, sondern es wird eine gute Webung für die Tierrechtsbewegung und eine Negativpropaganda für McDonalds sein.
