Nelle regioni del Kossovo dilaniate dalla guerra, decine di migliaia di rifugiati continuano a sopravvivere con magre razioni di cibo. La fame nel mondo è un problema serio e la nostra è solo una minima descrizione di questa grave tragedia umana che aumenta sempre . La scioccante verità à che mai prima nella storia una percentuale tanto elevata di persone - circa il 20% - à stata malnutrita. Il numero di morti ogni anno per fame e altre malattie ad essa correlate oscilla tra i 40 e i 60 milioni in tutto il mondo. Purtroppo, il prezzo da pagare è più alto per i bambini. ### Malnutrizione Nel suo lavoro di ricerca "Stato del Mondo dei Bambini 1998 ", il Segretario Generale dell’ONU Kofi Annan ha denunciato una semplice ma pesante verità. "Sembra che la nutrizione possa cambiare la vita dei bambini, possa potenziare il loro sviluppo fisico e mentale, proteggere la loro salute e gettare le fondamenta per la produzione futura. Oltre 200 milioni di bambini sotto i cinque anni che vivono in paesi in via di sviluppo sono malnutriti. Per loro, e per il mondo in generale, questo messaggio è urgente. Ogni anno la malnutrizione contribuisce alla morte di più della metà dei circa 12 milioni di bambini sotto i cinque anni che vivono in paesi in via di sviluppo. I bambini malnutriti spesso soffrono la perdita di preziose capacità mentali. La denutrizione è oggi legata alla crescita di bambini ed adolescenti in condizioni povere, al sottopeso dei neonati e alla capacità di un bambino di resistere alle malattie. ### Il diritto ad una buona nutrizione Qualunque siano i benefici di una nutrizione di vasta portata, l'assicurare una buona nutrizione è anche un aspetto della legge internazionale. Il diritto ad un'appropriata nutrizione riceve la sua più completa e prominente espressione nella Convenzione dei Diritti dell'Infanzia delle NU del 1989 in base alla quale ogni paese del mondo riconosce virtualmente il diritto di tutti i bambini ad avere il più elevato standard di salute raggiungibile - includendo specificatamente il diritto ad una buona alimentazione. Secondo l'eccellente principio guida della convenzione, la buona nutrizione del bambino è un diritto perchè essa si muove in risposta ai" migliori interessi del bambino". L'articolo 24specifica che i governi degli Stati devono prendere "appropriate misure" per ridurre la mortalità infantile e combattere malattie e malnutrizione attraverso l'uso di tecnologie velocemente reperibili e tramite l'approvvigionamento di adeguati e sufficienti cibi nutrienti ed acqua potabile. Considerando quanto sopra scritto, possiamo solo concludere che ogni essere umano sul pianeta è obbligato ad alleviare la denutrizione dei bambini sulle basi della legge internazionale, della conoscenza scientifica, delle esperienze pratiche e della morale umana. ### La fame in un mondo di abbondanza Il tema affrontato all’’United Nations World Food Summit, tenutosi a Roma nel 1996, è "La Fame in un Mondo di Abbondanza". I rappresentanti delle Nazioni Unite e delle organizzazioni non governative si sono riuniti per discutere quali potessero essere le possibili soluzioni a questa crisi mondiale rimasta in sospeso e che tuttavia continua ad aggravarsi e a misurarsi con la coscienza e con la sopportazione dell'umanità nel ventunesimo secolo. Il segretario generale dell'incontro, Dr. Kay Killings, ha spiegato che il problema **non era l'insufficiente produzione di cibo** bensì ***la diseguale distribuzione***. "Il risultato è che il cibo non raggiunge chi ne ha bisogno" ### Far si che le nostre vite siano espressione del nostro spirito John Robbins, autore del vendutissimo *Diet for a New America*, scrive: "L'esistenza di tante persone affamate nel mondo è una realtà che non possiamo negare. Si tratta diuna realtà che ci sfida profondamente: ci chiede di diventare umani in modo più completo." Robbins rileva come il problema della fame nel mondo non sia solo di competenza delle Nazioni Unite, ma di ogni essere umano sul pianeta. "Quando ci ricordiamo di coloro che non hanno cibo, " dichiara Robbins, "qualcosa si sveglia dentro di noi. I nostri più profondi appetiti affiorano in superficie e la nostra voglia di vivere appieno fanno sì che le nostre vite siano portate a schierarsi con la nostra compassione e siano espressione del nostro spirito." ### Una missione mondiale per nutrire e educare Food for Life, missione umanitaria dell’International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), è costituita da un gruppo di vegetariani che sta tentando di apportare miglioramenti nelle vite di persone che soffrono la fame. Il loro scopo "di costruire un mondo pacifico e prosperoso attraverso la generosa distribuzione di sacro cibo vegetariano" prevede una duplice strategia: 1. ***Programmi di nutrizione*** 1. Ristoranti con cibo gratuito 2. Ristoranti a prezzi ridotti 3. Aiuti di emergenza 4. Consegne a domicilio 5. Centri di accoglienza (persone senza fissa dimora, donne sole) 6. Programmi di nutrizione nelle scuole 7. Distribuzione di cibo nelle chiese 8. Festival culturalreligiosi 2. ***Educazione morale*** 1. Vendita di ricettari vegetariani 2. Incontri di più credi religiosi 3. Diffusione tramite gruppi ecclesiastici 4. Relazione con i media 5. Pubblicazioni religiose ### Come possono vegetariani e vegan contribuire al progetto? Da quando la denutrizione è un fattore così fondamentale della fame nel mondo, ogni anno gruppi di vegetariani e vegan investono sostanziose parti dei loro budget nell’educazione del pubblico circa la validità dell’alimentazione basata sui prodotti vegetali. Ma è davvero abbastanza? Avendo visitato più di 50 Paesi per aiutarli a stabilire iprogrammi di nutrizione, la mia esperienza mi ha mostrato che la più pratica delle soluzioni, offrire direttamente un pasto caldo vegetariano ad una persona affamata ottiene un un effetto più tangibile i che qualsiasi programma d'educazione da milioni di dollari. Non fraintendetemi. Entrambi i programmi hanno i loro meriti. Il detto "insegna a qualcuno come coltivare il cibo e lo nutrirai per tutta la vita" è ancora valido. Tuttavia, le giuste circostanze non potranno essere sempre disponibili ed, escludendo gli sforzi di gruppi come "Food not Bombs" e "Food for Life", non ci sono state molte attività "pratiche" di aiuto da parte di comunità vegetariane e/o vegan. Sento il bisogno di colmare questo squilibrio, ecco quindi qualche suggerimento pratico per agire in questa direzione. 1. ***Programmi di nutrizione*** La comunità vegetariana e vegan potrebbe attuare i seguenti punti: 1. Ristoranti vegan a prezzi ridotti 2. Consegne a domicilio 3. Centri di accoglienza (persone senza fissa dimora, donne sole) 4. Club vegetariani nelle scuole 5. Supporto finanziario per opere esistenti Le strategie pratiche sopracitate sono molto simili a quelle di Food for Life, con l'eccezione dei ristoranti gratuiti, dei sussidi di emergenza e della distribuzione di cibo nelle chiese. Offrire un supporto finanziario a gruppi di sostegno costituiti da vegetariani e vegan è un modo semplice per raggiungere gli stessi obiettivi. 1. ***Educazione alla nutrizione agli Opinion Leaders*** 1. UNICEF 2. World Food Program (WFP) 3. Programmi di formazione con gruppi di sostegno 4. Programmi di formazione con gruppi appartenenti alle chiese 5. Relazioni con i media 6. Pubblicazioni di governi 7. Ministero dell'Istruzione 8. Ministero della Sanità Tutte le organizzazioni e gli organi sopraindicati potrebbero essere presentati tramite kit dalll’aspetto professionale contenenti gli ultimi studi scientifici sull’alimentazione vegetariana . Essi potrebbero essere prodotti dall'IVU e venduti ai membri dei gruppi Una considerazione molto importante in merito all'informazione sui programmi di distribuzione è il bisogno di coerenza. ### Conclusione Crediamo fermamente nella responsabilità di ogni essere umano sul pianeta di agire nello sradicare la denutrizione che sta uccidendo 12 milioni di bambini ogni anno. Tale responsabilità è stata rilavata da molti importanti vegetariani e altresì confermata dal Convegno sui Diritti del Bambino delle Nazioni Unite nel 1989. Nonostante gli sforzi di molti organismi umanitari, la fame nel mondo sta crescendo. Le comunità vegetariane e vegane di tutto il mondo dovrebbero accettare la sfida di **stabilire programmi di nutrizione locali ed educare non solo le masse ma anche le persone che occupano posti di rilevanza nel mondo riguardo ai benefici globali di un'alimentazione vegetariana e vegana**.
