A menudo oirás decir: "Pero los perros son carnívoros, y los carnívoros necesitan carne". Sin embargo, los hechos no son tan sencillos. Estudios científicos han descrito el "síndrome de sólo carne" en el que los animales alimentados solamente con carne (sin añadir vitaminas ni minerales) desarrollan huesos blandos, un estado general lamentable, y a veces mueren. Se atribuye esta enfermedad a una falta de los adecuados calcio, yodo y vitaminas A y B1, y a una relación inadecuada entre calcio y fósforo. La carne es particularmente deficiente en calcio. La dieta natural es mucho más variada. Los perros y gatos salvajes comen, no sólo la carne, sino los huesos (ricos en calcio), los órganos internos, y los intestinos, que contienen una variada cantidad de materia vegetal. ¿Por qué deberían ser vegetarianos? Incluso con las ayudas del gobierno, el coste monetario de la carne es alto. Para la vaca, cordero, pollo, conejo, cerdo o pez, el coste es más alto: pierdan la vida. Y, en muchos casos, esta vida habrá sido corta, encarcelados en granjas de engorde intensivo. La carne importada puede venir de países donde los métodos de matanza sean extremadamente crueles. Por supuesto que es bueno salvar a un perro no querido de la muerte, pero pierde parte de su significado si hay que matar a otros animales para alimentar a éste. Además, comer carne es una forma de prolongar el sufrimiento humano. Mientras la mitad del mundo muere de inanición, nosotros continuamos criando animales como alimento, una forma poco eficiente de producción, ya que sólo una pequeña parte de lo que comen los animales se convierte finalmente en carne o productos lácteos. El rendimiento de los nutrientes esenciales de la tierra disponible se incrementaría enormemente cultivando alimentos vegetales para uso directo. (ver El Impacto de Comer Carne en el Medio Ambiente) Principios básicos Si eres vegetariano, ya sabes de comida vegetariana. Con un poco de sentido común tus propias comidas pueden adaptarse para tu perro. Dale mucha variedad, las deficiencias son improbables si come una amplia gama de alimentos. Entérate de lo que le sienta bien y lo que le gusta. Que las comidas sean apetitosas; el sabor y el olor son particularmente importantes. Es importante recordar que a los perros les gustan los productos a base de levadura, así que añadir un poco (por ejemplo Marmite o Barmene o un poco de proteína vegetal texturizada) puede hacer que la comida sea más apetitosa, además de añadir vitaminas del grupo B. Recuerda que los perros tienen el tracto digestivo más corto que los humanos, y puede que no les vayan bien las grandes cantidades de fibra. Sin embargo, sí que necesitan comerla (verdura, salvado, cereales integrales y fruta cruda). La cocción de las verduras fibrosas, (15 minutos hirviendo), rompe las fibras y las hace más digestivas, pero demasiado tiempo de cocción destruye algunas vitaminas, particularmente la tiamina. La fibra cruda llena el estómago y rebaja la sensación de hambre además de estimular la defecación, así que algo de verdura rallada o picada es útil en la dieta. Las patatas pueden causar molestias digestivas en algunos perros. Un consumo excesivo de azúcar y alimentos azucarados causa caries, diabetes, indigestión y obesidad. Lo que comen Estos detalles dados por dueños de perros vegetarianos en Gran Bretaña muestran que les gusta y les va bien el siguiente régimen de alimentación. Sólo es una guía y debe ajustarse para tu perro. Perros adultos A los perros generalmente les sientan bien dos comidas diarias, un desayuno pequeño y una comida/cena a la tarde, aunque a las razas enanas puede que les vaya mejor 3 o 4 comidas más pequeñas. **Desayuno:** (a la mañana o mediodía)... normalmente cereales integrales como el "muesli" o gachas de avena con leche. Se puede añadir un poco de miel o levadura seca en polvo si gusta. **Cena:** (a la tarde o al anochecer)... una selección de lo siguiente: queso rallado, requesón, huevo, pastel de frutos secos (casero o enlatado), proteína vegetal, lentejas u otras legumbres, sin olvidar las tradicionales alubias con salsa de tomate en lata. **Junto con:** Verduras, cocidas o crudas, ralladas o picadas, como la coliflor o la zanahoria. **Otros alimentos adecuados:** 1. Fruta picada o rallada, frutos secos. 2. Pan integral (fresco o tostado), sandwich de Marmite, galletas de bebés. 3. Arroz integral, cereales germinados. 4. Recuerda que los perros necesitan alimentos duros para ejercitar sus encías y mandíbulas; una dieta siempre blanda causa sarro, piorrea y dientes flojos. Los perros pueden masticar zanahorias crudas enteras, tallos de col ligeramente asados, huesos de nylon , manzanas crudas, galletas duras integrales para perros. 5. Diariamente, una cucharadita de aceite crudo como aceite de girasol u oliva (sin calentar), para un perro de tamaño medio o unas gotas para los enanos por vía oral o mezclado con la comida, ayuda a suministrar grasas esenciales ara mejorar el pelaje. El aceite debe guardarse en un frasco cerrado, en un lugar fresco y oscuro (preferiblemente un frigorífico) para evitar la oxidación de los ácidos grasos. En algunos perros el aceite puede causar diarrea, en éste caso, rebaje la cantidad. Cachorros **Las primeras 8 semanas** Los cachorros dependen totalmente de la leche de la madre hasta que tienen aproximadamente 3 semanas. Siguen tomando leche materna hasta las 7 u 8 semanas, pero durante este periodo habrá que ir añadiendo cantidades progresivamente mayores de otros alimentos. Por lo tanto, (desde las 3 semanas, antes si es necesario), ofrézcales pequeñas fuentes con leche, a veces con cereales para bebés o cereales integrales finamente molidos en forma de gachas bastante líquidas (quizás añadiendo una pizca de levadura de cerveza para enriquecer las vitaminas del grupo B). Un poco más tarde, ofrézcales otros alimentos de la lista. Empiece con alimentos de fácil digestión como el requesón o huevo pasado por agua. Si ciertos alimentos causan diarreas fuertes, evítelos. Hay que dar comidas pequeñas unas 5 ó 6 veces al día, ya que los animales jóvenes no pueden digerir cantidades grandes. **De 8 semanas a 4 meses** Cuatro comidas pequeñas diarias. Como guía: 8.00 a.m.: Cereales con leche. Mediodía: Pastel de frutos secos y verdura, huevo, queso, frutos secos rallados, pan integral con Marmite o Barmene, fruta, etc. 4.00 p.m.: igual que a la mañana. 8.00 p.m.: igual que a mediodía También dar alimentos para roer. **De 4 a 8 meses** Eliminar una comida, por ejemplo la de las 8 a.m., y dar 3 comidas un poco más grandes. **De 8 meses en adelante** Alimentar como a un adulto, normalmente 2 comidas al día. Los enanos a menudo comen 3 ó 4 veces al día. Cuánta comida Cada perro es distinto. Una guía muy aproximada sería 60g de alimento por cada kilogramo de peso del cachorro, y la mitad para perros adultos. Este cálculo aproximado puede cambiar mucho por lo siguiente: 1. el contenido líquido del alimento. 2. el contenido calórico del mismo; un perro con tendencia al sobrepeso puede comer mucha cantidad de comida baja en calorías como la col o la coliflor, pero mucho menos alimento alto en calorías como el pan o los cereales. 3. Variaciones individuales: por ejemplo, algunos Pastores Alemanes nerviosos necesitan 3 ó 4 veces más calorías que algunos Labradores del mismo tamaño, o que algunos Pastores Alemanes con el metabolismo más lento. El progreso del individuo debería siempre ser nuestra guía, asegurándonos de que el perro tome una dieta equilibrada. No sobrealimente. Un perro gordo no es un perro sano. Si un perro ésta engordando, ésta ingiriendo demasiadas calorías. Ojo con el picoteo entre horas, puede sumar muchas calorías. Si acostumbras al animal a las verduras bajas en calorías desde el principio, será mucho más fácil bajarle de peso, si hace falta, en el futuro. En la mayoría de los casos, el peso pude ser controlado por las calorías; sólo unos pocos son problemas glandulares sin cura. No obligues a un perro a comer si no quiere, puedes estarle enseñando a estar gordo. Nota final Puedes servir una dieta perfecta, y aún así puedes estropear la salud del perro si no realiza suficiente ejercicio. Todos los perros necesitan abundante ejercicio al aire libre, TODOS LOS DíAS. La limpieza es importante, el cepillado regular es necesario. Hay que peinar a las razas de pelo largo diariamente, si no el pelo enmarañado puede causar enfermedades de la piel y parásitos.
