Una mañana, me desperté y no pude mover mis manos. Estaban inflamadas y empuñadas y el intentar mover mis dedos era extremadamente doloroso. En las próximas semanas, los síntomas se esparcieron hacia las otras coyunturas. Mis muñecas, mis hombros, mis rodillas y las coyunturas de mis pies se volvieron rígidas, hinchadas y delicadas. Después de unas semanas de sufrimiento, finalmente me di cuenta que esto no era normal y fui a visitar al doctor de la familia. él me envió a un reumatólogo. A la edad de 21 años, se me diagnosticó Artritis. Estaba consternada al escuchar el diagnóstico. Permanecí preguntándome “¿por qué yo?” La artritis era algo que las abuelas tenían a los 85 años, no jóvenes saludables. Desdichadamente, esa creencia es un mito. La artritis es un término acallado para una enfermedad que abarca más de 100 condiciones distintas que van desde una tendinitis suave y bursitis a la invalidante artritis reumatoide. Como una enfermedad, la artritis no discrimina. Puede afectar a niños que aún están en pañales, a personas en la plenitud de su vida como a personas mayores. La condición se distingue por una inflamación en las coyunturas, que dan como resultado un dolor en las coyunturas y en el músculoesqueleto y finalmente una pérdida de la movilidad. Los doctores aún desconocen las causas de la artritis y aunque no se conoce ninguna cura, los síntomas pueden ser tratados mediante una variedad de medicamentos y cambios en el estilo de vida. Inmediatamente después de mi diagnóstico, mis síntomas empeoraron. Estaba un poco deprimida y con grandes dolores. Hubo días en los que ni siquiera pude levantarme de la cama debido a la hinchazón y rigidez. También estaba experimentando un grado limitado de movimiento en algunas coyunturas afectadas. No pude nunca más levantar lo suficientemente mis brazos para poder secarme el pelo y subir los cierres de la espalda de mis vestidos era imposible. Se me trató con una serie de drogas anti-inflamatorias no esteroides (de la sigla en inglés NSAIDs). Para aquellos que no están familiarizados con estas drogas, no son los medicamentos más amigables que hay. Son drogas muy fuertes que suprimen la inmunidad, tienen efectos adversos en el hígado y riñones, y son corrosivos para la cubierta interna del estómago. No era capaz de tolerar estos medicamentos. Me provocaban violentos calambres estomacales, náuseas y diarrea. En mi caso, el tratamiento prescrito era tan malo como la enfermedad. Cada vez más impaciente con los cursos tradicionales de terapia, me convencí que tenía que haber una manera más gentil y más efectiva de tratar mi artritis. Después de muchas horas de haber leído todo sobre el tema, descubrí el vínculo entre la dieta, el ejercicio, el estrés y la artritis. Muchas formas de terapias convencionales sólo tratan los síntomas de la artritis. Por otra parte, los cambios en el estilo de vida afectan a la persona como un todo, haciéndola más saludable y dándole una postura más optimista. A su vez, tales cambios tienen un efecto positivo en la enfermedad en sí misma. Así es como llegué a ser una vegetariana físicamente activa y con manejo del estrés. Innumerables estudios publicados en diversas publicaciones médicas demuestran que una dieta vegetariana reduce los síntomas de la artritis en la mayoría de la gente. Tanto la Arthritis Society en Canadá como la Arthritis Foundation en Estados Unidos proporcionan las siguientes recomendaciones dietéticas para personas que sufren de artritis: - coma una variedad de alimentos - mantenga un peso ideal - evite demasiada grasa y colesterol - evite demasiada azúcar - coma productos que sean altos en fibra - evite demasiado sodio - limite su consumo de alcohol Las recomendaciones anteriormente citadas son altamente compatibles con una dieta vegetariana. Empecé, concretamente, comiendo mucha fruta, vegetales, cereales integrales y legumbres. Limité mi insumo de alimentos procesados, cafeína y sodio y dejé de consumir alcohol, todo en conjunto. Mi nueva dieta vegetariana era alta en antioxidantes y fitoquímicos, que promovieron la salud de mis coyunturas. Era también naturalmente baja en grasa, colesterol, azúcar y alta en fibra. También comencé un programa regular de ejercicios. Los beneficios del ejercicio fueron triples. Estiraron mis músculos, permitiéndoles soportar más mi peso, quitando algo de presión de mis coyunturas. El ejercicio también me ayudó a mantener un peso ideal, garantizando que no habría un exceso de presión en mis coyunturas. Finalmente, el ejercicio me dio una vía de escape para soltar mi estrés de una forma positiva. Después de unas pocas semanas, mis cambios en el estilo de vida estaban teniendo un efecto profundo en mi calidad de vida. Mi dolor y rigidez desaparecieron. Recuperé un grado total de movimiento en las coyunturas afectadas. Más importante, tuve de nuevo una perspectiva positiva de la vida. Por primera vez después de un largo periodo, sentí que tenía control sobre mi cuerpo. Ahora, a seis años de mi diagnóstico, no tengo que tomar más medicamentos para mi artritis. Estoy viviendo relativamente libre de síntomas gracias al vegetarianismo, el ejercicio y el manejo del estrés. Inicialmente me convertí en vegetariana por motivos médicos, pero finalmente evolucioné, asumiendo las causas éticas y convirtiéndome en una vegana.
