Esta persona decidió que era aceptable hacer sufrir a animales en experimentos dolorosos si éstos podían llevar a una cura de su condición.  Actualmente, me encuentro en extremo dolor, pero he llegado a una conclusión totalmente opuesta. Cuanto más sufro, más me opongo a la experimentación con animales (y otros tipos de explotación). A continuación encontrarán una descripción de lo que he pasado en las últimas 24 horas (sólo han sido 24 horas???), y sobre lo que esto me ha hecho sentir en cuanto a los derechos de los animales.  Ayer, un cirujano dentista que nunca había visto me extrajo las cuatro muelas del juicio bajo anestesia local. Yo he tratado con un sinnúmero de doctores y dentistas que han sido incompetentes y/o sin ningún interés real sobre sus pacientes, pero esta persona se gana el premio de puro sadismo. Antes de que empezara la cirugía ya estaba peleando para quitarmelo de encima porque seguía con lo que estaba haciendo y no hacía caso de la importante información que trataba de comunicarle. En toda una vida de procedimientos físicos dolorosos, incluyendo punciones espinales y endodoncias, nunca antes había tenido que luchar físicamente contra un médico. Así de mal estaba la situación, las cosas sólo empeoraron a lo largo de la sesión quirúrgica.  Desde que regresé a casa no he tenido que lidiar con más sadismo, sólo con los cuidados amorosos de mi pareja que ha hecho todo lo posible para aliviar mi dolor y ha sido extremadamente tolerante con las manchas que dejo por la sangre que sale de mi boca. Sin embargo, el dolor físico sigue muy fuerte, aún después de la aplicación de bolsas de hielo. Las cosas han mejorado bastante desde que mi pareja encontró unas pastillas de codeína que le habían dado hace unos años cuando se fracturó un hueso, pero como sólo quedan pocas he tenido que racionarlas por lo que sigo con mucho dolor.  El dolor es el peor síntoma, pero también hay otros. El lado izquierdo de mi cara tiene varios centímetros de hinchazón, y mi quijada está tan hinchada que no la puedo cerrar por consiguiente no puedo hablar o comer. (Afortunadamente todavía puedo beber, y he podido beber la suficiente sopa para mantenerme hidratada y alimentada. El tragar es doloroso - muy doloroso - pero aún posible).  La conexión con los derechos de los animales es la siguiente: Desde el primer momento que sentí el intolerable dolor, desde la primera instancia de sadismo lo que pensé fue, "esto es lo que se siente al ser un animal de laboratorio." Me dieron a probar lo que se siente al estar en un dolor extremo, y a merced de alguien que parecía disfrutar activamente al estar infligiendo ese dolor. Después ya estando en casa pero con demasiado dolor como para poder dormir aunque estaba exhausta y con demasiado dolor como para poder hacer cualquier otra cosa, probé lo que debe sentir un animal de laboratorio que ha sido dejado sin atención alguna la noche después de la "cirugía".  Al mismo tiempo, estaba (y sigo estando) consciente de que estaba en una posición infinitamente mejor que la mayoría de los animales de laboratorio. A mí me aplicaron anestesia local, tuve la posibilidad de quitarme al cirujano de encima. Después de una tarde en el consultorio del doctor, pude regresar a mi casa donde tenía a alguien ayudándome toda la noche con lo que necesitaba, trayéndome hielo y distrayéndome lo más posible. Finalmente, once horas después de la cirugía encontramos la codeína y pude sentir un verdadero alivio (de otra manera no hubiera podido escribir esto).  Sabiendo lo mucho que he sufrido, y como es mucho peor para la mayoría de los animales de laboratorio, no hay manera de que pueda justificar el usar animales en experimentos para mejorar mi calidad de vida. Ahora, un escéptico puede decir que siento de esta manera porque sé que eventualmente el dolor cesará y que dentro de una semana me sentiré bien otra vez. Puede ser, pero también pienso que si me enfrentara a toda una vida de agonía preferiría morir antes que infligir una agonía peor a otros animales sensibles por la esperanza de aliviar el mío.  Claro que esta empatía con los animales de laboratorio también se extiende hasta los animales de granja. Hasta ahora, los procedimientos que usualmente se usan en las granjas industriales de hoy como el cortar el pico y alas de las gallinas y pollos, y otros procedimientos similares eran conceptos totalmente abstractos para mí. Ahora, tras haber sentido el taladro atravesando mi carne y lo que se siente al arrancarte algo de tu carne (en mi caso al extraer cuatro dientes), puedo imaginarme mejor lo que se debe sentir con que te quemen la punta del pico, o que te amputen las alas o te mutilen los dedos. Y estos animales no tienen ni siquiera el beneficio de anestesia local para la cirugía en sí, o de la codeína para el alivio del dolor.
