Este informe afirmaba que la BST era segura para el consumo humano: > No hay evidencia de que la BST constituya una amenaza para la salud humana. En Noviembre de 1993, la firma Monsanto había obtenido el visto bueno de la FDA para fabricar y distribuir la BST bajo el nombre comercial de *Posilac*. Como resultado, en Febrero de 1994 (tras una moratoria de tres meses) el suministro lechero de América cambió de la completa bebida que acompañaba las tartas de manzana de mamá a la pócima genéticamente diseñada sacada de una historia de terror de ciencia ficción más allá de la imaginación. \[[Contrapunto](#counter)\] La compañía Monsanto debió observar los efectos sobre animales en estudios sobre la ingestión oral de BST. Cuando se inyectó, el bazo de los animales creció de tamaño un 40-46%. Oralmente, las ratas macho experimentaron un aumento del tamaño del bazo superior al 8.3%. La media en las hembras fue de un aumento del crecimiento del 6.9%. Los bioquímicos de Monsanto debían haber sabido que los animales que ingerían BST oralmente sufrían efectos biológicos. Sin embargo, la conclusión del estudio fue que no había ningún efecto biológico sobre los animales de laboratorio por la ingestión oral de BST. No hay absolutamente ninguna posibilidad de que el consumo de leche procedente de vacas tratadas con BST pueda incrementar el riesgo de cáncer de mama. Toda agencia reputada acepta las conclusiones emitidas por la FDA. La mayoría de esas conclusiones fueron extraídas del documento histórico que la FDA publicó en *Science*, la revista científica más prestigiosa del mundo. El artículo de *Science* de Juskevich y Guyer afirma: > El tratamiento con BST produce un aumento en la concentración de IGF-I (factor de crecimiento semejante a insulina-I) en la leche de vaca. ¿Habían salido a comer todos cuando se dijo esto? Ellos observaron que los ratones tratados con IGF desarrollaban un amplio espectro de tumores con una frecuencia mayor que el grupo de control al cabo de 18 meses. ¿Sin efectos orales? Además, la media de los machos pierden más de un 5% de tejido de corazón, riñón e hígado comparados con el grupo de control. ¡Esto son efectos biológicos! La conclusión nº 1 de la FDA (sin efectos) conduce a las conclusiones 3, 4, 5. La conclusión nº 2 afirma: "La leche de vacas tratadas es indistinguible de la leche de vacas no tratadas." Los científicos no leen sus propios informes. En la página 128 de un estudio preparado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud se afirma: "Los estudios demuestran que las concentraciones de IGF-I no se alteran tras el tratamiento con BST". En la página 120 de ese mismo monográfico comprobamos que Monsanto realizó varios estudios para determinar la línea de base media de IGF-I en la leche no tratada. Un estudio de 100 muestras de leche pura a granel de una planta de procesamiento comercial reveló que la concentración media de IGF-I por litro de leche es de 4,320 nanogramos (me referiré a ellos como unidades). Al pie de la página 120, leemos: > Tras la inyección de somidobove, los niveles medios de IGF-I en los animales tratados son siempre superiores que los hallados en los de control. La página 121 revela lo que sucede con el IGF tras el tratamiento con BST: > La concentración media de IGF es de 35,500 unidades. La caseína actúa deteniendo la descomposición del IGF que entra en el estómago y no está unido a otras proteínas. El IGF realmente pasa a través del tracto digestivo sin ser digerido. La FDA se equivoca al suponer que los IGFs se descomponen y no afectan las funciones metabólicas humanas. La evidencia contradice abrumadoramente esta conclusión. ## Cáncer Los científicos descubrieron que los IGFs juegan un papel decisivo en el crecimiento de las células cancerosas de páncreas, de tumores cerebrales, colorectales, tiroideos, linfáticos, renales y óseos. De hecho, los doctores han observado que las células cancerosas humanas dependen de las señales a través del receptor de IGF para su supervivencia y crecimiento continuado. ## Cáncer de Mama Imaginemos el crecimiento de una célula cancerosa. La primera célula en invadir un pecho. Siempre debe existir una primera. La célula contiene un código en su ADN para reproducirse. Puede pasar una semana, o seis meses, antes de que se divida en dos células, y luego en cuatro y luego ocho. Cada vez que la célula se divide hay un periodo de tiempo hasta la nueva división. Ese periodo de tiempo generalmente es el mismo para cada duplicación. Supongamos ahora que el tiempo de duplicación sea de 3 meses. Una mujer necesitará entre 500 y 1000 millones de células para detectar un bulto en su pecho. Para nuestro propósito eso significaría 29-30 duplicaciones. Si cada proceso de duplicación equivale a tres meses, el cáncer será detectado aproximadamente 90 meses después de la aparición de la primera célula. No se puede observar este proceso en un laboratorio y probablemente nunca se hará. Sin embargo, de los datos anteriores, podemos interpolar y "estimar aproximadamente" tanto el proceso como los efectos del IGF combinado con estrógenos. Supongamos ahora que tenemos un efecto acelerante de 10 veces. En lugar de 29-30 duplicaciones, apreciaremos el bulto en menos de un año. Así funciona el IGF. Inunda el sistema y apresta las células para su magnífica celularidad y proliferación. Los doctores, ya en 1991 habían implicado al IGF-I como críticamente involucrado en el crecimiento anormal de las células de cáncer de mama. Otros equipos de investigación publicaron los resultados de su trabajo en 1993 y 1994 implicando al IGF como el factor más significativo en el cáncer de mama. Dado este hecho, ¿cómo pueden los autores proponer que el IGF-1 supuestamente de origen dietético pueda tener algún efecto?
