Tal vez piensas que hice voto, una forma de penitencia, negándome todos los placeres gloriosos del consumo de carne. Recuerdas los bistecs jugosos, los pescados suculentos, salsas maravillosamente sabrosas, jamones perfectamente ahumados y miles de maravillas creadas de la carne, encantando miles de paladares humanos; por cierto recordarás la exquisitez del pollo asado. Ahora, ves, estoy rechazando todos esos placeres y tú crees que sólo la penitencia, o un voto solemne, un gran sacrificio podría privarme de esta manera de disfrutar de la vida, o forzarme a sobrellevar tal renunciamiento. \*\*\* Estás atónito, y me preguntas: «¿Pero por qué y para qué?» . Y estás preguntándote si casi adivinaste la razón misma. Pero si trato ahora de explicarte la razón en una frase exacta, estarás atónito de nuevo de cuánto se ha desviado tu adivinanza de mi motivo verdadero. Escucha lo que te tengo que contar: Rehúso comer los animales porque no puedo nutrirme con el sufrimiento y la muerte de otras criaturas. Lo rehúso porque yo he sufrido tanto que puedo sentir el dolor de los demás cuando recuerdo el mío. Me siento feliz, nadie me persigue; ¿por qué debo yo perseguir a otros seres o causar que se les persiga? Me siento feliz, no soy prisionero, estoy libre; ¿por qué debo yo causar que otras criaturas lleguen a ser prisioneros y que las envíen a la cárcel? Me siento feliz, nadie me daña; ¿por qué debo yo dañar a otras criaturas o causar que les dañen? Me siento feliz, nadie me hiere; nadie me mata; ¿por qué debo yo herir o matar a otras criaturas o causar que las hieran o maten para mi placer y conveniencia? ¿No es natural que no inflija yo el mismo dolor que, espero y temo, nunca se me inflija a mí? ¿No sería injusto hacer tal cosa con el único otro propósito del placer físico a costa del sufrimiento y de la muerte de otros? Estas criaturas son más pequeñas e indefensas que yo, pero ¿puedes imaginar a un hombre razonable de sentimientos nobles a quien le gustaría basar en tal diferencia el derecho de abusar de la debilidad y la pequeñez de otros? ¿No piensas que sea el deber del más grande, del más fuerte, y del superior proteger las criaturas más débiles en vez de perseguirlas, en vez de matarlas? Quiero actuar de una manera noble. \*\*\* Recuerdo la época horrible de la inquisición y lamento decir que el tiempo de los tribunales para los herejes no ha desaparecido aún, que día tras día, los hombres cocinan a otras criaturas que se dan libremente a las manos de sus torturadores. Me horroriza la idea de que tales hombres son gente civilizada, no bárbaros incultos, no indígenas. Pero a pesar de todo, son primitivamente civilizados, primitivamente adaptados a su medio ambiente cultural. El europeo medio, rebosante de ideas intelectuales y discursos bellos, comete todo tipos de atrocidades, sonriendo, no porque esté obligado a hacerlas, sino porque quiere hacerlas. No porque le falta la capacidad de reflexionar y de darse cuenta del horror de todas las crueldades que comete. ¡Ay de mí! Sólo porque no quiere ver la realidad. De cualquier otra manera estaría apenado y preocupado en su placer. \*\*\* Es bastante natural lo que te dice la gente. ¿Cómo podrían hacer de forma diferente? Los oigo relatando experiencias, de utilidades, y sé que ellos consideran ciertos actos relacionados con la matanza como inevitables. Tal vez tuvieron éxito en convencerte. Lo adivino de tu carta. De todos modos, considerando sólo las necesidades, uno estaría de acuerdo con tales personas. ¿Pero realmente hay tal necesidad? Se puede oponer esta tesis. Quizás exista una necesidad para la gente que aún no ha desarrollado su personalidad consciente. No les sermoneo. Te escribo esta carta, a un individuo ya consciente que controla racionalmente sus impulsos, que se siente responsable, interiormente y exteriormente de sus actos, que sabe que nuestra corte suprema se sienta en nuestra consciencia. No hay ninguna jurisdicción de apelación que lo oponga. ¿Hay alguna necesidad para la cual un hombre consciente debe matar? Afirmativamente, cada individuo tendría el coraje de llevarlo a cabo por sus propias manos. Es, evidentemente, un tipo miserable de cobardía pagarles a otros para hacer el trabajo sangriento, que el hombre normal rechaza con horror y consternación. También habrá guerras porque hay que entrenar y perfeccionar la matanza en objetos más pequeños, moralmente y técnicamente. No veo ninguna razón para sentirme encolerizado por lo que hacen los demás, ni por los actos grandes ni por los pequeños, ni por otros actos de violencia y crueldad. Pero, creo, es tiempo de sentirse ultrajado por todos los actos de violencia y de crueldad pequeños y grandes que hacemos nosotros mismos. Y porque es más fácil ganar las luchas más pequeñas que las grandes, creo que debemos despedirnos de nuestras hazañas de violencia y crueldad, lo más pequeñas que sean. Debemos evitarlas, o mejor, aniquilarlas para siempre. Entonces veremos el día en que será fácil luchar y sobrepasar aun las crueldades más grandes. Pero todavía dormimos, todos, en hábitos y actitudes fijados. Son como una salsa grasosa y jugosa que nos ayuda a tragar nuestras propias crueldades sin saborear su amargura. No intento indicar con el dedo éste y ése, a personas definidas y situaciones específicas. Pienso que mi deber es agitar mi propia consciencia en asuntos pequeños, tratar de comprender mejor a los otros, de mejorarme y llegar a ser menos egoísta. ¿Por qué debería ser imposible actuar apropiadamente con respeto a puntos más importantes? éste es el punto: quiero madurar en un mundo mejor donde una ley más alta otorgue más felicidad, en un nuevo mundo donde reine el mandato de Dios: Y Uds. se amarán... *Edgar Kupfer-Koberwitz* --- **Sobre el autor:** *Edgar Kupfer fue encarcelado en el campo de concentración de Dachau en 1940. Sus últimos 3 años trabajaba en un puesto clérico en la despensa del campo de concentración. Ese trabajo le permitió escribir un diario secreto en hojas de papel y pedacitos de lápiz robados. Enterraba sus escrituras y cuando liberaron Dachau el 29 de abril de 1945, las recopiló de nuevo. "Los Diarios de Dauchau" se publicaron en 1956. De sus notas de Dachau escribió un informe sobre el vegetarianismo que se tradujo al inglés. Una copia al carbón de este informe de 38 páginas se guarda con los Diarios de Dachau originales en la Colección Especial de la Universidad de Chicago.
