Almacenado en depósitos subterráneos, también genera gas metano que se usa para calefacción y cocinar. El estiércol de vaca también es un desinfectante efectivo y se usa como cataplasma y como agente limpiador. El verdadero nombre de las vacas es *aghnaya* que significa "no debe ser matado". *Habiendo considerado el origen de los alimentos cárnicos, y la crueldad de encadenar y asesinar seres corpóreos, que el hombre se abstenga totalmente de comer carne. - Manusmriti 5.49* **Vegetarianismo y No-violencia** En el *Manusmriti*, se afirma que se debe abstener de comer toda clase de carne, pues comerla exige matar y conduce al cautiverio kármico (*bandha*). Por otro lado en los Vedas, el último de los grandes Reyes Védicos, Maharaja Pariksit, dice que "sólo el asesino de animales es incapaz de saborear el mensaje de la Verdad Absoluta". Por tanto, los Vedas nos informan de que para obtener sabiduría espiritual, se debe empezar por ser vegetariano. **La Misericordia del Señor** Según las escrituras védicas, se deben ofrecen todos los alimentos como un sacrificio a Dios: "...todo lo que haces, todo lo que comes, todo lo que ofreces y obsequias, así como todas las austeridades que puedas realizar, deben ser realizadas como una ofrenda hacia Mi". *(Bhagavad-gita 9.27)* El Gita también aclara exactamente qué debe ser ofrecido: "Si alguien Me ofrece con amor y devoción una hoja, una flor, fruta o agua, lo aceptaré". *(Bhagavad-gita. 9.26)* El *Bhagavad-gita* declara también que alguien que ofrece amorosamente su alimento a Dios, según las directrices de las escrituras, es liberado de todas las reacciones pecaminosas y nacimientos consiguientes en el mundo material: "Los devotos del Señor son absueltos de toda clase de pecado porque comen alimentos que han sido previamente ofrecidos en sacrificio. En la India, los mayores templos, como el de Shri Rangam al sur del país y el de Jagannath Mandir, el mayor templo de Puri, distribuyen gratuitamente alimentos vegetarianos santificados (*prasadam*) a diario. **Animales y Espiritualidad** Mucho antes de que San Francisco fuese declarado santo patrón de los animales, los sabios de la antigua India habían ya reconocido la espiritualidad en todas las especies vivientes. Los textos védicos incluso describen encarnaciones de Dios en diversas formas animales. Algunas de las más populares son el cerdo, la tortuga, el pez, y el caballo - ¡existe incluso una encarnación mitad hombre / mitad león! (La literatura védica no promueve el politeísmo, sino que los Vedas afirman que es el mismo y único Dios que aparece bajo diversas formas). ¡El punto de vista védico incluso reconoce la capacidad de los animales ordinarios para alcanzar estados elevados de espiritualidad! Esto es así debido a la opinión de que la espiritualidad no está limitada a la forma humana y que en última instancia el cuerpo externo es un alojamiento temporal para el alma espiritual eterna. Los Vedas afirman que el alma viva transmigra, de cuerpo a cuerpo, de especie a especie, hasta alcanzar finalmente la forma humana, equipada con la razón y la posibilidad de indagar en la Verdad Absoluta. Ejercitando esa prerrogativa humana, se puede concluir el ciclo de nacer y morir repetidamente y alcanzar el reino de Dios.
