Ansiar un alimento es también anhelar la experiencia del alimento: verlo, tocarlo, olerlo, saborearlo. Cuando comemos y sensorialmente experimentamos el alimento, incorporamos una parte del mundo que nos rodea. Por tanto confirmamos nuestro dominio sobre el mundo. **Alimento para la conciencia** Cuando mordemos un trozo de alimento, generalmente no lo hacemos con un espíritu de humildad. Es meramente un acto de agresión auto-afirmante, una necesidad de supervivencia, del mismo modo que la enérgica aunque inconsciente unión del bebé recién nacido al pecho de su madre es desesperadamente un comportamiento innato diseñado para hacer de este primer encuentro del recién llegado con la dureza del mundo tan seguro y tolerable como sea posible. Al sentir el recién nacido la leche tibia y densa, se hace consciente por vez primera del alimento. Y a medida que el bebé crece hacia la niñez y la madurez, la experiencia física del alimento se vuelve psicológica, y después mental, también. La consciencia física del alimento es la primaria y la más primitiva. Cuando empieza a gustarnos o a disgustarnos la comida, cuando empieza a afectar nuestras emociones, la consciencia física del alimento queda reemplazada por una de tipo psicológico. Mientras tanto, también aprendemos a discriminar los distintos tipos de alimento. Cuantos más productos comestibles somos capaces de reconocer, cuanto más sabemos sobre los alimentos y la química y fisiología de su digestión, más se convierte nuestra consciencia psicológica en mental. Es en ese momento cuando empezamos a pensar sobre por qué nos gustan ciertos alimentos más que otros y sobre qué constituye la combinación alimenticia ideal para nuestro bienestar físico, psicológico y mental. Podemos incluso intentar comprender cómo exactamente el alimento afecta nuestra totalidad existencial. **La inmortalidad de la vida** Esto es de suma importancia puesto que el alimento es nuestro contacto permanente con el mundo. Dependemos de él para sobrevivir, tanto como dependemos del mundo. A través del alimento, con él, y por él, manipulamos, controlamos, creamos y destruimos nuestro entorno. Cuando consumimos plantas, animales y sus productos derivados (frutas, semillas, frutos secos, leche, huevos, etc.), seguimos siendo lo que éramos de recién nacidos: agresivos en el sentido de autoafirmarnos con fines de supervivencia. Si no matamos y devoramos animales para sobrevivir, podemos comer sus huevos y leche o alimentarnos con vegetales únicamente. Si, además, no deseamos usar productos animales ni matar plantas para comer tampoco, tendremos que alimentarnos sólo con productos obtenidos de plantas. No obstante, hagamos lo que hagamos, de algún modo tenemos que destruir vida o vida en potencia. Esto es así simplemente porque *la vida se alimenta de vida. Es su modo de asegurarse la inmortalidad*. Comer es nuestro intento de asegurar nuestra inmortalidad, también. Nosotros, además, podemos decidir sobre nuestro comportamiento nutricional. Comer vegetariano es conceder a los animales el derecho de afirmar su voluntad de vivir. Ser vegano, por otro lado, es concederles la posibilidad y el derecho de procrear (huevos) y alimentar a su descendencia (leche). Algunos de nosotros confiamos sólo en las frutas, semillas, frutos secos y similares para alimentarnos, en un intento de evitar quitar la vida de las plantas. Esto se hace muy difícil y es prácticamente imposible no interferir con la vida en potencia. Sea como sea, cuanto más evolucionemos a lo largo de la línea de no interferencia con las diversas expresiones de la lucha de la vida por la inmortalidad y cuanto menos daño inflijamos sobre los animales y las plantas, mayor será nuestra humildad y reverencia por la vida.
