#  Vegetarian News - Ingeniería Genética

Hay, por supuesto, mucho que decir sobre ello, pero quisiera que nuestros lectores abordasen el tema mediante "Cartas al Editor" que puedan ser publicadas y discutidas sobre una base científica. - Dr. Claude Pasquini*   En un e-mail dirigido a la IVU, el vegetariano y casi-vegano miembro de VUNA/IVU Dr. Emanuel Goldman, profesor de Microbiología y Genética Molecular, insta a los promotores de la "Plegaria Mundial del Milenio" a eliminar toda la frase entera sobre la manipulación genética. La frase a la cual objeta dice: "Nos oponemos a la introducción de genes animales en los seres humanos y a la manipulación genética de animales y plantas". Y en efecto el simple hecho que él indica, "los genes obtenidos de animales pueden ser manipulados genéticamente y mediante tecnología ADN recombinante expresados en bacterias, levaduras o plantas" nos ofrece lo que él denomina "la oportunidad más realista" de liberar a la humanidad de tener que matar o explotar animales.   Gracias a la recombinación de ADN, somos capaces de obtener productos de animales que son beneficiosos para nosotros y para ellos, como por ejemplo, insulina modificada genéticamente, hormona tiroidea o cuajo, siendo esto último aclamado por muchos vegetarianos como un paso importante hacia la salvación de millones de terneros que de otro modo deberían ser sacrificados con destino a la industria productora de queso.   Desde un punto de vista vegano, esa forma de tecnología del ADN todavía explota a los animales, aunque también conlleva la posibilidad de corregir dolencias humanas y animales sin tener que volver a depender jamás del mundo animal para obtener el material básico, los genes.   Manipular genéticamente las plantas para hacerlas más resistentes a los pesticidas ciertamente no es una forma ecológicamente correcta de producir alimentos saludables. Pero interferir genéticamente en nuestros alimentos para mejorar su valor nutritivo sin poner en peligro nuestra salud y reducir o eliminar la dependencia de pesticidas y fertilizantes puede muy bien ser aceptable.   La tecnología del ADN no tiene que servir intereses creados de las grandes compañías agrarias; no tiene que ser una ciencia aplicada para beneficio de la ciencia tampoco, ni deberíamos adherirnos tan sólo porque podamos hacerlo. Definitivamente no debería ser terreno de juego de personajes de Frankenstein para producir y usar animales transgénicos, siempre rechazando los enormes riesgos de los xenotrasplantes de una especie a otra, ya sea parte del reino animal o vegetal o del mundo de las bacterias. La tecnología ADN podría muy bien ser, sin embargo, un medio para evitar el agotamiento del suelo, para proteger los recursos acuíferos, para ayudar a luchar contra el hambre en el mundo y para conservar espacios abiertos para el beneficio de la humanidad y de la vida salvaje.   Por supuesto, los temores y aprensiones sobre la manipulación genética están justificados. Y debemos ser extremadamente cautos sobre lo que estamos haciendo y sobre quién lo está haciendo para qué propósito. Después de todo, estamos manoseando procesos evolutivos propensos a hacer tonterías con los ladrillos de la vida. Recordemos que hemos estado metiéndonos en cierto tipo de manipulación genética durante toda nuestra historia agrícola. Si la ingeniería genética está aquí para quedarse, deberíamos preocuparnos de asegurar que cada vez más miembros de la comunidad científica sean del tipo Goldman, lo que equivale a decir, realistamente, éticamente y ecológicamente conscientes vegetarianos, casi-veganos e incluso mejor veganos.
