Cuando el economista observa nuestros recursos naturales, su referencia será un valor monetario tal como el dólar o el euro. Podemos considerar nuestros recursos naturales desde una perspectiva ecológica o económica o incluso, porqué no, espiritual. Lo que cambia es la forma de verlos. Lo que no cambia es que los recursos naturales están sencillamente ahí, que están hechos de energía, de materia que vive y muere, de materia que siente y piensa. Y estos recursos naturales siempre estarán ahí, no importa la forma en que los veamos, a menos por supuesto, que la materia y la energía -algún día- ya no constituyan recursos para nadie, para ninguna criatura. Esto sucederá cuando la vida y las necesidades vitales de recursos hayan desaparecido de este planeta. **Nosotros somos el problema alimentario** La materia y la energía están sencillamente ahí. Independientes - como son - de la forma en que las valoremos, no pueden ser el problema. De hecho nuestra forma de valorarlas es el problema, lo que equivale a decir, que ¡nosotros somos el problema! No dejes a nadie evadirse diciendo que tenemos un problema ambiental, que tenemos un problema alimentario, sea local, regional, nacional o global. Dile que no es cierto, sino que nosotros somos el problema ambiental, que nosotros somos el problema alimentario. **La unicidad de ecología y economía** Mientras sigamos creyendo, por ejemplo, que una economía en expansión inevitablemente viene acompañada por un entorno degradado o que una excesiva protección del medio ambiente tendrá un impacto negativo sobre nuestro desarrollo económico y bienestar, mientras sigamos pensando así, seguiremos imaginando el estado ecológico del mundo y el estado económico del mundo como dos cosas distintas, cuando de hecho no lo son. Cuando hablamos de reunir de nuevo economía y ecología, nuestras ilusiones nos esconden que han estado separadas tan sólo en nuestra mente. Manteniendo ecología y economía separadas en nuestra mente, nos mantenemos alejados de nuestros recursos naturales, que constituyen - después de todo - nuestro entorno natural, que es, al mismo tiempo y en un sentido amplio, nuestro alimento natural. Así pues, la crisis ecológica global es la crisis alimentaria global. Nuestra crisis alimentaria global es nuestra crisis ecológica global y ni la ecología ni la economía resolverán jamás dicha crisis mientras no lleguemos a vernos a nosotros mismos al menos como parte integrante de nuestros recursos naturales. **Somos alimento, somos medio ambiente. ¿Somos compasión?** Cuando comemos, comemos medio ambiente. Cuando digerimos, nos convertimos en lo que comemos, nos convertimos en medio ambiente. Cuando excretamos, excretamos medio ambiente al medio ambiente. Si - como dice el refrán - somos lo que comemos, somos medio ambiente. Una vez comprendamos esto totalmente, nuestra mente se convertirá en un recurso natural, que - por fin - ya no distinguirá entre comida y medio ambiente, una mente que intentará infligir el menor daño posible al medio ambiente, a los alimentos y, por último pero no menos importante, a sí misma. Una mente así no puede sino devolvernos a la forma no-violenta, conservadora en sentido ecológico, de vivir y comer. Esta es la salida real, o más apropiadamente, esta es la salida vegana de nuestra crisis global alimentaria y ambiental.
