Lee** La religión es una difícil área desde la cual surgen muchos sentimientos fuertes. IVU no adopta ninguna fe y es neutral en cuestiones de religión. Sin embargo, la religión es un aspecto de la vida que no se puede ignorar porque ha jugado el papel más importante a través de la historia en lo que respecta al tratamiento de los hombres con los animales. Ya sea tomando a los animales como comida, para sacrificios o como objetos de uso para lo que nosotros queramos, los grupos religiosos han adoptado diversas posturas, las cuales han causado distintos grados de sufrimiento a los animales. Los humanos han intentado justificar el trato que han dado a los animales tomando como excusa la gran variedad de las festividades y rituales religiosos. Mientras que muchos de los vegetarianos son religiosos, otros se oponen a la religión en cuanto que la consideran como la mayor causa de sufrimiento de los animales. Sea el que fuere el punto de vista de cada uno, la religión es un aspecto de la vida que ninguno de nosotros puede ignorar completamente, por lo tanto IVU lo está subrayando aquí. El tratamiento de varias religiones al vegetarianismo parece extenderse desde los Jainistas con su total respeto por la vida, pasando por el trato budista hasta algunos sectores cristianos con sus mandatos vegetarianos. Muchos miembros de la Iglesia Adventista del Séptimo Día son vegetarianos, pero no todos siguen el camino vegetariano. La Iglesia Anglicana normalmente ve a los animales como seres puestos en la Tierra para el uso de los humanos y éste es un trato similar al que ofrece la Iglesia Católica y Romana. En un reciente número de INROADS, en la carta de la International Network for Religion and Animales (INRA), señala que la fundadora de INRA ha abandonado la Iglesia Católica y Romana en la cual había nacido. La razón de su acción fue la última edición del Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica. Ella asegura que el nuevo Catecismo pone de relieve la idea de que, durante todas las generaciones, ha sido un concepto público y tradicional que los animales fueron creados para el uso de los hombres (Catecismo página 280). "Los animales, como las plantas y los seres inanimados son por naturaleza destinados para la felicidad, en el pasado, presente y futuro, de la humanidad". En la página 590 continúa diciendo: "Ellos pueden ser utilizados para servir la justa satisfacción que los hombres necesitan". Ella continúa sugiriendo que esa es una “tradición”, pasada de generación en generación, que ha llegado a ser como un mal hábito, sostenido sin ninguna razón, sin examinar las premisas iniciales y sin consideración a las normas culturales del tiempo en las cuales esa “tradición” se desarrolló. Esa tradición ignora los avances en el conocimiento y en la tecnología, o los efectos que éstos tienen sobre el reino animal. Los hombres disponen ahora de un control total sobre el reino animal y son capaces de hacer lo que quieran con él. Tenemos el conocimiento y el poder para eliminar a la mayoría de las especies, si no a todas. Seguramente, esto nos da responsabilidades especiales para con los animales. El Catecismo dice (pág. 850): "por su existencia ellos bendicen y dan gloria". Los animales no pueden hablar por ellos mismos por lo que nosotros necesitamos actuar y hablar por ellos. El Catecismo urge a la gente a proceder con amabilidad y bondad con los animales, pero ese requerimiento esta vacío a menos que tales sentencias no sean apoyadas con firmes propósitos para asegurarse realizar actos con compasión. Prácticas en España presentadas como festivales religiosos y eventos similares frecuentemente se centran en el abuso de los animales; incluyendo la lapidación hasta la muerte, tirándolos desde una torre y torturándolos por las calles mientras el público aplaude. Muchos de estos actos son justificados en el nombre de la religión; y no sólo es en España donde estos abusos existen. En discusiones sobre comer o no comer animales que he tenido con muchas personas religiosas normalmente resulta que intentan justificar esas prácticas en el nombre de Dios y con la creencia de que EL aprobaría esa conducta. --- ### ¿Son los cristianos vegetarianos? **Por Keith Akers** *Este artículo ha sido escrito por Keith Akers, de la Vegetarian Society de Denver, Colorado y fundadora de North American Regional Secretary, para la IVU. También a todos los animales de la tierra, y a todas las aves del cielo, y a todos los seres vivientes que sobre la tierra están y se mueven les doy para comida cuanto de verde hierba la tierra produce". *Génesis 1:29-30* "En aquel día haré en favor de ellos concierto con las bestias del campo, con las aves del cielo y con los reptiles de la tierra, y quebraré en la tierra arco, espada y guerra, y haré que reposen seguros". *Oseas 2:18* "Habitará el lobo con el cordero, y el leopardo se acostará con el cabrito, y comerán juntos el becerro y el león, y un niño pequeño los pastoreará. La vaca pacerá con la osa, y las crías de ambas se echarán juntas, y el león, como el buey comerá paja. El niño de teta jugará junto a la hura del áspid, y el recién destetado meterá la mano en la caverna del basilisco. No habrá ya más daño ni destrucción en todo mi monte santo, porque estará llena la tierra del conocimiento de Yavé, como llenan las aguas del mar". *Isaías 11:6-9* "Y enjugará las lágrimas de sus ojos, y la muerte no existirá más, ni habrá duelo, ni gritos, ni trabajo, porque todo esto es ya pasado". *Apocalipsis 21:4* **Dios cuida a los animales:** "Es benigno Yavé para con todos; y su misericordia sobre todas sus obras". *Salmos 145:9* "Mirad como las aves del cielo no siembran, ni siegan, ni encierran en graneros, y vuestro Padre celestial las alimenta". *Mateo 6:26* **Dios quiere que nosotros cuidemos a los animales:** "El justo provee a las necesidades de sus bestias, pero el corazón del impío es despiadado". *Proverbios 12:10* "Si encuentras el asno de tu enemigo caído bajo la carga, no pases de largo; ayúdale a levantarlo". *Exodo 23:5* "Si ves el asno de tu hermano o su buey caídos en el camino, no te desentiendas; ayúdale a levantarlos". *Deuteronomio 22:4* "Hay quien sacrifica un buey y mata un hombre..." *Isaías 66:3* **Dios rechaza los sacrificios de animales:** "¿A mí qué, dice Yavé, toda la muchedumbre de vuestros sacrificios? Harto estoy de holocaustos de carneros, del sebo de vuestros bueyes cebados. No quiero sangre de toros, ni de ovejas, ni de machos cabríos. Quien os pide eso a vosotros, cuando venís a presentaros ante mí, hollando mis atrios". *Isaías 1:11-12* "Lavaos, limpiaos, quitad de ante mis ojos la iniquidad de vuestras acciones. Dejad de hacer el mal". *Isaías 1:16* "Pues prefiero la misericordia al sacrificio, y el conocimiento de Dios al holocausto". *Oseas 6:6* "Si entendiérais que significa que misericordia quiero y no sacrificio, no condenaríais a los inocentes". *Mateo 12:7* "Los sacrificios fueron inventados por los hombres como pretexto para comer carne". *Clemente de Alejandría* **Otros testimonios cristianos:** "El comer carne era desconocido hasta el gran diluvio, pero desde entonces ellos metieron las hebras y los fétidos jugos de la carne de animal dentro de nuestras bocas, justo como ellos lanzaron a las ansiosas quejas de la gente en el desierto. Jesucristo, que apareció cuando la hora había sido cumplida, ha unido de nuevo el final con el principio, por lo tanto no se nos está más permitido comer carne de los animales". *San Jerome* "El humo de las comidas con carne oscurece el espirítu. Uno puede obtener difícilmente virtud si disfruta con comidas de carne y fiestas.
