Schwartz**](https://ivu.org/history-of-ivu.html?view=article&id=4220:congress-wvc96-authors&catid=203) de Nueva York, EE.UU., ha escrito acerca de sus opiniones sobre el judaísmo y el vegetarianismo y **R.N.Lakhotia**, Presidente de la Zona Norte del Congreso Vegetariano Hindú, ha escrito un artículo sobre *"Espiritualidad y Vegetarianismo"*. El Dr. Schwartz es bien conocido por su libro sobre *"Judaísmo y Vegetarianismo"*. --- **Richard Schwartz** escribe: Me alegró encontrar los artículos sobre 'Religión y Vegetarianismo' en el número de Febrero/Marzo. Pienso que los vegetarianos deberían intentar empezar diálogos respetuosos en las comunidades religiosas sobre nuestras dietas, porque hay grandes inconsistencias entre los valores religiosos básicos y las realidades de la ganadería moderna y el consumo de carne. Los siguientes puntos se basan en las enseñanzas judías, pero pueden ser fácilmente adaptados a otras perspectivas religiosas. 1. Mientras el judaísmo establece el mandato de que la gente sea muy cuidadosa preservando su salud y su vida, las dietas basadas en productos animales han sido enlazadas con las enfermedades cardíacas, diversas formas de cáncer, apoplejía, y otras enfermedades degenerativas. 2. Mientras el judaísmo recalca que la gente debe compartir su pan con los hambrientos, el 70% del grano cosechado en los Estados Unidos se da a los animales destinados al matadero, cuando 20 millones de personas mueren anualmente a causa del hambre y sus efectos. 3. Mientras el judaísmo enseña que 'la tierra es del Señor' y que las personas deben ser socios de Dios en la conservación del mundo, el uso despilfarrador de comida, tierra, agua, energía y otros recursos, contribuyen sustancialmente a la erosión y agotamiento del suelo, la contaminación del aire y del agua, la destrucción de las selvas tropicales y otros hábitats, y el potencial calentamiento global. 4. Mientras el judaísmo enfatiza la compasión por los animales, los animales son criados como alimento hoy en día bajo condiciones crueles, en jaulas atestadas, donde se les niega el aire fresco, el ejercicio y cualquier estimulación emocional. 5. Mientras el judaismo recalca que la gente debe buscar y perseguir la paz y que la violencia es resultado de condiciones injustas, las dietas basadas en productos animales, por despilfarrar recursos valiosos, ayudan a perpetuar el hambre y la pobreza extendidas que a la larga conducen a la inestabilidad y a la guerra. En resumen, a la vista de los fuertes mandamientos judíos para conservar la salud, ayudar a alimentar al hambriento, proteger el medio ambiente, conservar los recursos, ser compasivo hacia los animales, y buscar y perseguir la paz, y los muy negativos efectos que las dietas basadas en productos animales tienen sobre cada una de estas áreas, espero que los judíos y otros que se toman los valores religiosos con seriedad considerarán seriamente cambiar hacia dietas vegetarianas. Un artículo presentado en una conferencia dada en un Congreso Vegetariano Judío en 1993 titulada 'Proposición sobre Judaísmo y Vegetarianismo' está disponible para cualquiera enviando una petición al Secretario General Honorífico junto con seis sellos de respuesta postal internacional. --- ### Base de Religión y Espiritualidad en el Vegetarianismo **por R. N. Lakhotia** La mayoría de los seres humanos del mundo creen en una u otra forma de religión y son espirituales. Pero el hecho sorprendente de la vida moderna es que muchas de las personas supuestamente religiosas o espirituales que practican distintos tipos de culto, observan los ayunos, ocasionalmente visitan el templo, la mezquita, la iglesia u otro lugar de culto, visitan un lugar de peregrinaje e includo ofrecen donativos, etc., no dudan en comer alimentos no vegetarianos, tanto a sabiendas como sin saberlo. Hay algunas personas que no creen en ninguna religión ortodoxa como tal pero que son espiritualmente conscientes, p.ej. están interesados en la búsqueda de Dios, el alma espiritual. Tales personas creen en la divinidad del ser humano y consideran el alma como eterna e impregnando cada criatura viviente en el mundo. Una persona espiritual considera que el propósito esencial de la vida es la liberación por el establecimiento de una identidad con la verdadera naturaleza del alma a través de la meditación o cualquier otro tipo de yoga o práctica espiritual. Por desgracia, incluso algunos de las personas supuestamente espirituales parece ser que comen alimentos no vegetarianos. Las personas que son verdaderamente religiosas o espirituales por naturaleza jamás deberían pensar en tomar un alimento no vegetariano. Deberían ser vegetarianas. Este artículo, haciendo referencia a las escrituras, santos y personas importantes del mundo, plantea que la comida vegetariana es la única comida que debería ser consumida por las personas interesadas en la religión o en Dios o que tengan fe en cualquier tipo de religión o que crean en la espiritualidad. De modo que tales personas no deberían consumir ningún tipo de carne, pescado, ave o insecto o cualquier otro alimento obtenido mediante crueldad. ### Ahimsa y Vegetarianismo Un elemento importante de casi todas las grandes religiones es la compasión hacia las criaturas vivientes. Este principio encuentra expresión en el principio del 'Ahimsa' o 'No Violencia'. El gran sabio Patanjali en sus ocho senderos de yoga otorgó la máxima prioridad al Ahimsa como el primer 'Yama' a ser observado por la gente interesada en la espiritualidad o en la consecución de la divinidad o realización de sí mismo. Del mismo modo, los Vedas, el Gita y las demás grandes escrituras del mundo enfatizan de una forma u otra la importancia del Ahimsa. El Ahimsa sólo es posible mediante un estilo de vida vegetariano, y cualquiera que coma alimentos no vegetarianos no puede ser considerado, en sentido verdadero, como alguien que cree en el Ahimsa con verdadera compasión hacia todas las criaturas vivientes. Las tradiciones espirituales de compasión y Ahimsa condujeron al Artículo 51A (g) de la Constitución Hindú que impone sobre todo ciudadano el deber fundamental de mostrar compasión hacia todas las criaturas vivientes. Otro aspecto de la espiritualidad como queda patente en el Taittiriya Upanishad explica detalladamente la cronología de la creación de la humanidad mostrando claramente que el cosmos volvió del revés la energía sonora del 'OM' (el pranav) que salió de la garganta de Brahma por decreto del Alma Espiritual o Parmatama y que fue gradualmente transformada en materia, aire y gases de los que apareció el fuego y gradualmente el agua, la tierra y las plantas. Esta materia fue finalmente convertida en plantas por una cascada de creaciones y, por último, en el Ser Humano. De modo que los humanos deben su creación y nacimiento a las plantas. En esencia, las plantas podrían ser calificadas como bis bis .....abuelos del ser humano. 'Anna' no se refiere a ningún alimento no vegetariano. De forma similar, 'Anna' no significa arroz o trigo sólo sino toda clase de productos vegetales consumidos por los seres humanos como arroz, trigo, maíz, azúcar, verduras, frutas, etc., pero 'Anna' o comida no significa comida de origen animal en absoluto. No puede negarse que cada acto está precedido por pensamientos y que los pensamientos, buenos o malos, son resultado de los alimentos que comemos. Si comemos alimentos 'satvik' nuestros pensamientos se hacen 'satvik' y tendemos a ser más amables, considerados y compasivos hacia las criaturas vivientes. Es por ello que en el 'Chandogya Upanishad' se dijo 'Ahar shudhow sat vashudhow satwa shudhow dhruwa smriti', que significa que si la comida es pura, los pensamientos son puros y la memoria mejor. Y, si los pensamientos son puros, dan lugar a acciones puras. Otro aspecto que requiere una pequeña aclaración es el argumento de algunos de que las plantas también poseen vida de modo que comer plantas o vegetales puede considerarse como no vegetariano, pero esto no es cierto. Esto es debido a la falta de una comprensión adecuada sobre la naturaleza de las criaturas y la conciencia. Todas las criaturas se clasifican generalmente en dos categorías (1) las criaturas de un órgano conocidas como 'sthavar' y las de dos, tres, cuatro o cinco órganos conocidas como 'Tras'. Las criaturas de un órgano son aquellas que no poseen sangre o carne o huesos. Todas las plantas, frutas y verduras entran en esta categoría. El nivel de conciencia en tales criaturas es el más bajo y todas las escrituras claramente disponen que comer plantas o frutas de un sólo órgano no acarrea el asesinato y no se considera como violencia. Los alimentos producidos sacrificando criaturas de dos, tres, cuatro o cinco órganos acarrea violencia y asesinato y se consideran como 'no-vegetarianos'. El nivel de consciencia es gradualmente mayor y mayor en las criaturas de dos a cinco órganos. Está ampliamente aceptado que los alimentos son el origen de la química corporal y que lo que comemos afecta nuestra conciencia, emociones y patrón experimental. Así, si una persona desea vivir en una conciencia superior, en paz y felicidad y amor por todas las criaturas, entonces no debe comer carne, pescado, marisco, aves o huevos. Si se consumen alimentos de origen animal, se introduce cólera en la propia mente y cuerpo así como envidia, temor, ansiedad y terrible miedo a la muerte, todos ellos encerrados en la carne de las criaturas sacrificadas. Es por ello que los vegetarianos o 'Shakaharis' viven en una conciencia superior y los no-vegetarianos o 'Mansaharis' se conforman con una conciencia inferior. Además, la comida vegetariana es el único alimento ideal para la humanidad desde el punto de vista de la salud, la nutrición y el medio ambiente como lo demuestran los hechos científicos. Los argumentos anteriores son reforzados por los mandatos de las escrituras y las palabras de los grandes sabios y hombres del mundo , algunos de los cuales son citados a continuación: "Aquel que coma de la carne humana, de la carne de un caballo o de otro animal y prive a otros de leche por matar a las vacas, Oh Rey, si semejante demonio no desiste por otros medios, entonces no deberías dudar en cortarle la cabeza". \- Rig Veda Samhita, 10.87.16 "Pero ...comer carne de cualquier clase, de cualquier manera, y en cualquier lugar está incondicionalmente y de una vez por todas prohibido ...No he permitido comer carne a nadie, no lo permito, no lo permitiré". \- El Señor Buddha en el Lankavatara Sutra "Cuando un hombre se da cuenta de que la carne es el músculo descuartizado de una criatura, debe abstenerse de comerlo". \- Tirukural, 257 "No debes utilizar el cuerpo que Dios te dio para matar a criaturas de Dios, tanto si son humanas, como animales o lo que sea". \- Yajur Veda Samhita 12.32 "Se recomienda a las personas que desean avanzar en el eterno sendero espiritual que dejen atrás toda violencia hacia otras entidades vivientes de cuerpo, palabra o pensamiento. No hay religión superior a ésta". \- Srimand Bhagavatam 7.15.8 "Porque quienquiera que coma la grasa de la bestia que el hombre ofrece en ofrenda realizada con fuego al Señor, incluso el alma que la comió será arrancada de su gente. Y no deberás comer ningún tipo de sangre, sea de ave o de bestia, en ninguna de tus moradas". \- Levítico 7:23-27 "La comida vegetariana deja una huella profunda en nuestra naturaleza. Si todo el mundo adoptara el vegetarianismo, podría cambiar el destino de la humanidad". \- Albert Einstein "Los animales son nuestros amigos.... y yo no me como a mis amigos". \- George Bernard Shaw "Yo no considero los alimentos cárnicos necesarios para nosotros.
